I've been investigating this composer these past few days - I had Piano Concerto No.4 for years, but I have not really gotten into his other music. While he still leaves some things to be desired to be really "great" in his orchestral music, the pieces I've gathered are all still enjoyable. He was a true Romantic. I think, based on Clara Schumann's acute observations and very narrow critical eye, that Rubinstein - in concert, anyway - didn't have all the nuance of Liszt (no friend of Clara's) but for sheer blood and thunder, he must have been very impressive. Strangely, his arguably most popular piece, the Melody in F, leaves me cold. Much prefer his concerto and symphonic works. And I'm glad he gave back to the "Russian 5" as much as he got, lol.

Hi, thanks! Very nice to upload some Marco Polo CDs of this composer. His music is definitely on the lighter side. Enjoyable nonetheless. I am surprised, however, that it was only Marco Polo that recorded Kamenniy Ostrov which deserves to be performed more frequently. For some years the first of the two volumes was out of circulation - I could only find and buy the 2nd one that contains the most famous piece, XXII, subtitled RĂªve angelique, it is track 10 on this recording.
