Immediately after WWII Rudolf Escher, nephew to the famous artist M.C. Escher, became our most successful composer. A man of many talents – he used to write poetry and was a visual artist – he eventually decided to dedicate himself exclusively to music. The fact that he had pertinently refused to become a member of the so-called Kultuurkamer (like Hendrik Andriessen, another man of unwavering principles), an institution managed by the nazi occupiers, as well as his work for the illegal underground periodical “De Vrije Katheder” , will have helped to endear him to the public.
