You may remember I posted another album of this Korean composer ca. a year ago, as well as a video of her opera Alice In Wonderland.
This album contains the violin concerto for which Chin received the Grawemeyer Award. The significance of that award wasn’t lost upon me; somewhere I read it’s considered more important than an oscar. I understood this was the piece to get.
Somehow I forgot about it – or perhaps this release wasn’t in the collection of the library yet when I searched for her name, it’s quite recent (2009).
I’m glad I have it now. What’s more, I liked it immediately! This is exactly the kind of composition that will enter the contemporary music program of orchestras all over the world – for a long, long time to come.

Rocana is impressive, remembering a lot of sounds listen over the centuries: innovation into the music's mainstream, like all the good new scores deep-rooted on the solid knowledge of the tradition.
Thanks for this intriguing start of the new tiger year: Chin, Chin!
Yes, I think Chin is one to stay. And I have a weak spot for that face of hers, which is somewhere in between that of a benevolent high priestess and a fairy godmother.
Charming!
I'm delighted with the violin concerto. It's solid, sounds very good & modern, yet it is not too much of a muscular exercise for the brains. A good introduction for those who venture into contemporary music -but don't know-where-to-start, I'd say.
Happy New Year to all active Avax members! Keep the good stuff coming!
I love her Violin Concerto and it's nice to have it now in lossless.
