A Requiem from the composer of Cats, Evita, Starlight Express? The change of direction is less violent tan it might appear at first sight. In many ways this Requiem marks for Andrew Lloyd Webber a return to the musical surroundings in which he grew up.

School was at Westminster, just across the road from London's Houses of Parliament. Tradition closely linked the school to Westminster Abbey itself and in Lloyd Webber's day attendance at certain church services was obligatory. But, even more important, the Abbey was there at hand with occasions that were not obligatory for the Westminster pupils. Lloyd Webber recalls going to the impressive memorial service held for Ralph Vaghan Williams and also, as a thirteen-year old, crossing the Abbey yard through a thick fog for the first London performance of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, probably the last major, popular piece in the oratorio tradition to have been composed in England.

Two events set the Requiem in motion. the first was the death of A.L. Webber's father in 1982 and the second was a story about Cambodia in an obscure corner of the N.Y. Times, concerning a boy who was faced with the choice of killing his sister or being killed himself...

See booklet for details.

This is popular music, not classical. Although Webber gave a try to compose a Requiem (although I do not like Christianity, they contributed at least to the development of Westerm music, not only to flaming "heretics" and "witches.") but he failed. A musical composer is just a musical composer, and musical is very far from classical music. He was trying, trying, but why? I can recommend anyone to listen to this CD as a counter example for a good Requiem, so that we can appreciate Mozart, verdi, etc. much more after listening to trash.

@satavari
Your opinions are better to be written in a PM.

First of all, if you uploaded nothing, you MUST say only thanks, and MUST NOT criticise anything.

<If you think that wrote above, it is your mean.> I cannot understand this syntactically totally uncomprehendable sentence.

Sorry, I do not really understand your English; It is full of so many mistakes which make understanding it difficult and/or impossible.

Requiem IS a Catholic liturgiacal text, everybody knows that, no need to teach us, i don't understand why you mention this.

I got afraid - correctly: I AM afraid
predestine = not correct usage of this word in this context.

Turn to a good dictionary, please.

Anyway, the only good deed of Christianity is its contribution to the development of classical music. Well, I partially agree with you on the arbitrariness of the division between classical and popular, but somehow I am more conservqative on the issue and prefer classical to any musical or so called "rock operas" as you put is (Btw. what the hell is "rock opera?" It must be something awful - I hate rock.

Webber had at least good intentions to compose a Requiem, which is good. I just expressed my OPINION (not fact) about my feelings how I percieved his music.

For me it is a musical style mixture, far from quality.

I understand that you are biassed, since amateur choirs sing everything, and choir members are enthusiastic about singing everything the choir master gives the to sing.
