How alarmingly loud he can get, Wolfgang Rihm. He’s always trying to give his listeners a fright, what with his fast alternating between soft, quiet tones and sudden harsh blasts.
He does so here again, and to great effect; this might just become my favourite Rihm composition. Right from the start, with the piano duo mercilessly hammering away at the keys, we know we’re in for something overpoweringly grand. Le ciel? Suggestive of celestial, perhaps? - surely not; but grand it is.
Marvelous record!

imperdibile Rihm!
Many thanks d'Avignon!
Next time, I'll send you an album in advance and include your comments in my introduction above, ha.
I don't consider Rihm one of the easiest composers to stomach when it comes to works for large orchestras; but truly, I liked le ciel very much. I read he was only 25 when he composed it...remarkable.
