| “ | Here's the great Dave Holland, presenting a mixed album that at times flies, at times stumbles. Saxophonist Eric Person may not rank as the most striking sideman in the Holland quartet and quintet pantheon, but he's no slouch, either. And he is well shored up by three masterly collaborators. On vibes and marimba, Steve Nelson takes the time to find an unpredictable but just-right path in his solos, and nicely expands the group's sonic range. Drummer Gene Jackson flits and shifts, yet remains masterfully poised and always ready to dart in under the front line. Throughout--as always--Holland is extraordinary. His thrumming, throbbing sound envelops and locks the band in. He contributes a beautiful arco statement to the beginning of "Lazy Snake" that is classic Holland. Singer Cassandra Wilson contributes a setting of "Equality," a poem by Maya Angelou. --Peter Monaghan | ” |
