The autobiographical theme of "American Pie" may represent the youthful, popular American culture of the mid- and late-1950s that involved the styles in music, dance, dress, movies, radio, television, and romance that McLean loved as a child and young teenager. The chorus marks the passing of that culture and its values with the accidental deaths of Holly, Valens, and Richardson. Overall, McLean's musical "evolution" starts with Bob Dylan's celebration of expanding liberty, freedom, and individuality in "a voice that came from you and me"; moved through the drug-influenced culture of the mid- and late 1960s of "Helter Skelter" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles; and ended with what seems to be the masochistic violence of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones and the real violent mayhem at the Altamont (California) Speedway concert in December 1969.
"American Pie" has remained as much a cultural touchstone as a song, sung by everyone from Garth Brooks to Madonna.
This album also includes "Vincent," written as a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh. It is also known by its opening line, "Starry Starry Night", a reference to Van Gogh's painting Starry Night. The song mentions the title of a different painting by Van Gogh in each of its stanzas.
American Pie -- the album -- is very much a record of its time; it is imbued with the vague depression of the early '70s that infected the population and found expression in the works of singer/songwriters. "American Pie" -- the song -- is really a criticism of what happened in popular music in the '60s, and "Vincent" sympathizes with Van Gogh's suicide as a sane comment on an insane world. @All - I am so glad you are enjoying it. Thank you so much for your kind comments! Even if only you wonderful regulars stop by to post a hello or thanks, that is enough for me. I was a lurker too before I felt comfortable posting, so I know how those other folks feel. As long as the music is spreading joy to everyone, that makes me happy!

@Alejx and binbonbeach, you guys deserve a gold medal for how hard you are working for the project! Extra hugs and kisses to you!
