Don Wise - On The Verge Of Survival
Blues | MP3 VBR ~223 Kbps | 82 Mb | 2000

After years of laboring in relative obscurity, Don Wise has completed two musical recording projects and is working on a third CD, tentatively titled Deeper Shade of Blue. Since 1985 he has been an unassuming mainstay in the Delbert McClinton Band, performing soulful sax solos and on-the-money backup to the roadhouse rock of the Texas music legend. In 1989 Wise co-produced McClinton’s only live album to date. Four Don Wise solos from that recording were included in the CD accomanying John Laughter’s book, Contemporary Saxophone, and the album, titled Live From Austin, resulted in McClinton’s first–ever Grammy nomination.
During his years in music Wise has played in bands or shared the stage with, among others: Jeffrey Osborne, the original Coasters, Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, Ruben Ramos & Revolution de Mexicana, Chuck Jackson, Maxine Brown, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Marcia Ball, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Tower of Power, Huey Lewis, Hal Ketchum, Joe Ely, and Ray Charles.
Now, it’s his turn. Wise set out to do the type of recordings he would like to hear on the radio on those long drives from his home in Knoxville, Tennessee, to meet the McClinton band tour bus in Nashville. To get the results he wanted he returned to West Texas, where he spent some ten years performing in various bands in the 1970s and 1980s. There, drawing on his love for all kinds of music and his extensive background in R&B, he enlisted the musical and technical expertise of his friend and co-producer Wally Moyers of Studio 84 in Lubbock.
His first two projects, In Wise Hands and On The Verge of Survival, are the culmination of Don Wise’s desire to showcase not only his own abilities, but the talents of other artists, as well. Each cut is one-of-a-kind, most are brand new, and some are brand-new takes on old standards. Give them a listen, and we think you’ll like every song. It may be too good for mainstream radio, but there’s truly something for everybody here—everybody with a taste for the best, that is.
