The different instruments of Egyptian folk music are distinguished by their simplicity. It is customary that the folk artist makes his instruments himself out of wood, bamboo and other materials close to hand, namely in the fields. The handicraft of this trade is transferred from one generation to another orally, with certain rural families specialising in the making of particular instruments — for example, the "Metkal" and "El-Bess Families in the regions of Kena and Aswan are renowned for the making of the 'rababa', and the "Shahine" family for the'arghoul'. In 1969, the Ministry of Culture established the first official group for folk music instruments in Egypt, and I was honoured to be given the task of forming and supervising it. The aim of the group is to perform its songs, dances, and ballads ("Mawal") in the provinces, towns and villages as well as abroad. The group also gives purpose to contemporary composers, obvious in the works of Rifat Garranah, Kamil Salib, Hafez Salamah and Gamal Abdel Rahim, amongst many others. I began to experiment with Egyptian folk music instruments in my compositions for cinema and stage in 1963. My objective in using these instruments was to extract the capacity of the innate dramatic expression of thousands of years ago. -- Soliman Gamil
