One World One People, Brian Wayy's debut album under the Xcultures moniker, is an ambitious new age/world music fusion project of broader musical scope than contemporaries like Deep Forest or Enigma. Rather than restricting himself to a few musical sources and concentrating on one unified mood, Wayy draws his samples from all over the globe: you might hear a Japanese koto, percussion from Morocco or Senegal, chanting from Morocco or from the monasteries of Russia, Indian tabla and sitar, Scottish folk instruments, and more. It all varies from cut to cut, held together by Wayy's travelogue-ish vision, lush ambient synths, and electronic trance beats.

During the 30's and 40's Jorge became a mass phenomenon. Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez has made a jazz career in exploring its connections with the flamenco of his native Cadiz. On previous offerings, Dominguez has carved out a place where the various dance rhythms and sung cadences of flamenco find equal voice with jazz lyricism, exploration, and harmonic adventure. Flamenco Sketches began as a commission from the Barcelona Jazz Festival to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. The album is a re-visioned reading of the compositions on the iconic Davis album -- in different order -- as well as two other Davis compositions, "Nardis" (which he never recorded) and "Serpent's Tooth," from the trumpeter's Prestige years.

Pashalis Terzis is a very popular greek singer from Thesaloniki. Ha has a powerful and expressive "authentic" voice and has released many top-selling albums since 1980 when he recorded his first CD. This nice 4CD compilation, includes his most popular hits, including some excellent "zeimbekika". Axel Manrico Heilhecker is the essential component of Sunya Beat. The German multi-instrumentalist is accompanied by the Gambian Samson Gassama. The latter is a world famous specialist in African drums and percussions from Boogaraboo. Recorded in 1999, "Wandyah" reveals ethnic influences from one, and flamenco inclinations from the other. Important research work developed by Marcus Pereira on his Marcus Pereira Discos, Brasil, Flauta, Cavaquinho e Violão is included in the instrumental music series developed by the label, this time with the production of Luís Carlos Paraná. The musical formation around which the choro genre was historically crystallized (flute, cavaquinho, and guitar) is represented in this project by Manuel Gomes (flute), Benedito Costa (cavaquinho), and Geraldo Cunha and Adauto Santos on guitars (violão), with the additional support of Fritz (from Trio Mocotó) at the pandeiro.

On its own terms, Lebanese saxophonist Toufic Farroukh's Tootya is largely a success. What it seeks to be is a sophisticated—and at times pretentious—mash-up of Arabic popular and light-classical music with techno beats, Western pop, and a little Latin jazz, presumably targeted at upper middle class listeners in the Middle East and their brothers and sisters in the worldwide diaspora.
