Label: DIW/Columbia CK 67101 | Genre: Jazz/Avant-Garde/Free Funk

Guitarist James Blood Ulmer, whose "harmolodic" approach has given him a reputation as one of the most radically inventive artists on the jazz scene today, leads this eclectic ensemble through a set that combines elements of rock, blues, funk and free jazz. Bassist Amin Ali and drummer Cornell W. Rochester complete the regular cast, while saxophonists Arthur Blythe, Sam Rivers and Hamiet Bluiett all make guest appearances. Together they create an immense wall of free-form sound that has as much in common with the experimental noise-rock of Sonic Youth and Glenn Branca as it does with traditional jazz. All seven tracks find Ali and Rochester ably holding down the complex rhythmic foundations of the erratic compositions, while Ulmer's guitar trades off with the guest horns on dizzying, light-speed solos, moving in and out of unison as their flights of fancy dictate. The extremely busy soloing and dissonant arrangements may prove taxing for casual jazz fans, but In the Name Of... is sure to please fans of the free jazz sound.
