“While making this new recording of the Hohe Messe, I felt free to take a fresh look at the score. As a starting point I made an effort to make as little difference as possible between singers and instrumentalists - Bach himself frequently enough made parodies of his own instrumental music - I tried to forget the 'classical' division of the choir and to immerse myself in the impressive and rich tradition [of church music performance] of which Bach was a part.
