KOME: The LBJ Years Vol.1
LAME CBR 320 kbps mp3 | Classic Rock | 182MB

A time capsule of classic rock, featuring music from the LBJ years 1963-1968/9, when President Johnson occupied the White House. Recorded “live” on KOME-FM radio in May 1979.

The radio station KOME-FM was located in San Jose, California, and during the hey-day of rock was one of the top radio stations in the US, better even than stations in Los Angeles and New York according to many of its listeners. One of its more infamous station call-signs was “K-O-M-E … all over your radio!!”

Occasionally the station would have a theme-weekend, playing music exclusively of a certain kind over a Saturday and a Sunday. This recording is from one such weekend in May 1979, dubbed “The LBJ Years.” The only music played this particular weekend were songs released during the term of President Johnson, from 1963 through early 1969. This is, in my view, the peak period of so-called classic rock music.

This particular weekend, I had my reel-to-reel deck running almost continuously, recording everything during the hours I was home and awake. I then cherry-picked the tracks I liked, edited out commercials and the like, and transferred them to my other reel deck. The end result was about 6 hours of live radio DJ-mixed prime rock.

Most of the top hits of the day are included, plus others I don't see often on modern compilations, such as Naz's Under The Ice, Spirit's Fresh Garbage, or Count Five's Psychotic Reaction. And just to spice things up, Bela Lugosi in Frankenstein, Foghorn Leghorn, plus some other interesting interludes!!

I just got my reel deck out of storage and working, and if there is interest I will be happy to share future volumes as I transfer my tapes to computer. I'll upload them in CD-sized chunks.

This is Volume 1. The download consists of a single mp3 file with songs selected and mixed by the DJ in the order of the DJ's choosing. If someone wants to write a cue file, I'm sure many will appreciate it.
