Progressive Rock

When the departures of original frontman Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis a studio trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, few could have expected the band to climb to greater levels of commercial success. But that's exactly what happened, and Genesis' left-field rebirth as an unlikely pop act began with this album, which introduced the newly slimmed-down lineup. But that's not the whole story. While the haunting love song Follow You, Follow Me introduced the band to the singles charts, elsewhere the group's penchant for accessibly complex composition and evocative lyrical dramas is in force on tracks like Deep in the Motherlode, Burning Rope, Down and Out, and Ballad of Big.

This is one of the most improved upon Genesis albums. Yes, the excessive compression is still there. But there are improvements too - like the clarity of the vocals, and the bigger, richer drum sound.

Remix engineer Nick Davis denies any use of excessive compression, and has stated that he is hurt by the criticisms.

Down And Out Image (brick-wall compression)

But the visual displays of the files show otherwise: lots of dynamic clipping, just like the audiophile fans claimed they could hear. However, listening to the new vinyl masters of the Gabriel-fronted albums, shows that excessive compression is used far less on those vinyl versions. So the clipping prevalent on the new CD/SACD releases is certainly a result of the awful CD/SACD mastering by Tony Cousins.

I hasten to add: the stereo SACD layer is still nicer than the 16-bit CD layer due to the improved resolution. Which is best? The SACD or the DER issue? Judge for yourself! :)

@ drasglaf:
Sorry, I only have the 1976-1982 box. Maybe someone else will post the other SACDs and follow my lead.
Anyway, still to come from me: Duke, Abacab and Extras.

Sorry, I wrote this thinking of Genesis as released in 1982...
Anyway great shares that I wait anxious!
BTW, what's going on with avax these days? The audiophile and extreme quality sections don't get refreshed since March 21st...the only sections i use to look :)

@ drasglaf:
Avax has finished with the Audiophile tag now (at least I think they have). They are working on new tags for extreme quality/lossless and vinyl rips, I believe. To be fair, people were getting away with tagging all sorts of crap as "audiophile" (just like these Genesis SACDs - they're not audiophile at all, but I originally tried to tag them audiophile so they would show up on audiophile searches!).
The Rudy Van Gelder jazz remasters are another example - horrible, compressed, bright, over-EQ'd remasters that got tagged as "audiophile!" So I think Avax are correct to scrap that tag, it's too subjective. I don't even agree that most vinyl rips here are "audiophile." Most that I've heard are a bit nasty to my ears.

I compared my favourite track, The lady lies, from this sacd rip and DER.
It sounds... different. As LezDawson sais, the voice and drums are improved, but IMHO the real hero of this LP, Mr Tony Banks with his keyboards, looses power to balance that improvement. Not so bad at all, just different.
