Aladar Pege, born in Budapest in 1939, was a composer, Merited Artist of the Hungarian Republic, who also received Liszt and Kossuth Prizes, and was one of the most versatile persons of the musical life in Hungary. His name and musical play was both well known to jazz-fans and to the public of classical music concerts. He graduated at the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy in Budapest, on the faculty of doublebass. His teachers were Lajos Montág and Zoltán Tibay. Even during that time, he gave concerts frequently, then he continued his studies with Reinhold Zepperez in West-Berlin from 1975 to 1978. After coming home, he taught classical music at the Liszt Ferenc Musical College in Budapest, and later became his emeritus teacher. In addition to his pedagogical efforts he gave concerts worldwide, where he equally played jazz and classical music. His concert programme was often a mix of two - only seemingly contrary - repertoires. Here we must mention, that Aladár Pege's doublebass play was among the best on the list of the annually compiled jazzworld rankings for a long time, due to his extraordinory improvisation talent, instrument technical knowledge and musicality. The critics of the international musical reviews kept tallied him as the "Paganini of doublebass". He passed away in 23.09.2006, he was 67 years old.
Nagybőgőművész, tanár, jazzmuzsikusként és klasszikus előadóművészként egyaránt koncertezett. Játékát virtuozitás, kiváló improvizációs képesség, sokoldalú stílusismeret és muzikalitás jellemezte. Zenei tanulmányait 1959 és 1962 között a Bartók Béla Zeneművészeti Szakiskolában, majd 1964-től 1969-ig a budapesti Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Főiskolán Montág Lajos és Tibay Zoltán növendékeként végezte. Már zeneakadémistaként rendszeresen koncertezett, jazz- és klasszikus zenészként egyaránt fellépett. 1963-ban megalapította saját jazzegyüttesét. 1964-ben elnyerte a Prágai Jazzfesztivál Virtuóza címet, 1970-ben a Montreaux-i Jazzfesztiválon neki ítélték a legjobb európai szólistája díját. Ugyanebben az évben a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Főiskola tanársegédje lett, majd 1978-tól docensként oktatott az intézményben. 1975 és 1978 között Rainer Zepperitznél tanult tovább Nyugat-Berlinben. 1982-ben a New York-i Carnegie Hallban vendégszólistaként közreműködött Herbie Hancock koncertjén. (Ekkor ajándékozta neki Charles Mingus özvegye a néhai bőgősfenomén hangszerét.)
A hazai és a nemzetközi jazzéletben is rendkívüli népszerűségre tett szert. Számos önálló lemeze jelent meg Magyarországon és külföldön – jazz és klasszikus zenei kiadványok egyaránt. Fellépett a legrangosabb jazzfesztiválokon, olyan hírességekkel játszott együtt, mint Dexter Gordon, Art Farmer, Erich Kleinschuster, Albert Mangelsdorff, Johnny Griffin és Walter Norris. Pályafutása kezdete óta írt zenét és hangszerelt, valamint nagybőgőátiratokat is készített. Művészi és pedagógiai munkásságának elismeréseként 1978-ban Liszt-díjat, 1986-ban Érdemes Művész címet, 1999-ben Budapestért Díjat, 2000-ben a Magyar Köztársasági Érdemrend Tisztikeresztje kitüntetést, 2002-ben Kossuth-díjat, 2003-ban Inter Lyra Díjat, 2006-ban pedig posztumusz Magyar Jazz Díjat kapott.
