Rated by Soundstage.com: 5 out of 5 for Recording Quality! Review!

A favorite of audiophiles because her music and voice lend themselves to purist recording techniques, Diana Krall perpetually sounds in great form on her recordings... The sound, remastered by Bernie Grundman, is clear, spacious and well defined -- outstanding in every way, the backing players as vivid as Krall's voice and piano.
- Marc Mickelson/Soundstage.com

Recorded "live" at the Paris Olympia, Live in Paris offers listeners Diana Krall's understanding of the musical techniques of composition, piano, and vocal improvisation on 12 songs from the Great American Songbooks of Cole Porter,Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, and contemporary artists Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel. Accompanied by the award-winning Anthony Wilson on guitar, John Pisano on acoustic guitar, John Clayton on bass, Jeff Hamilton on drums, and Paulinho Da Costa on percussion as well as the Orchestra Symphonies European on "Let's Fall in Love" and "I've Got You Under My Skin," the lovely vocalist heightens your listening pleasures with distinctive phrasings and tangible pathways to inside the creative imagination by getting inside harmony, the changes, and melodic structures. On Joel's "Just the Way You Are," Krall is accompanied by Christian McBride on bass, Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone, Lewis Nash on drums, and Wilson on guitar, among others. This song also resides on the soundtrack to the film The Guru and is probably one of the best ballads on the set due to the great solo from Brecker. His powerful but sensitive playing adds the ultimate expression and approach to the melody -- one with attitudinal preparation, which is always necessary for a song that has such familiarity and association with another musician. For those who may not have heard Krall perform "live," this recording will give you a firsthand account of the ambience and excitement of a musical evening with her.

a question though: Whatever the merits of Vinyls, when it is ripped, aren't we left with a probably high definition digital music again? My apology in advance if the question is irrelevant.
Posted By: 0pp0 Date: 10 Mar 2010 21:13:11
Since I have been digital since the 80's I will give you my take on it. The digital rip seems to recreate the picture painted by the vinyl playback. For instance a digital camera can take a pretty good photo but a analogue photo scanned into the digital world looks better. For whatever reason tape to cd sucks in comparison to the depth n separation of vinyl to disk.
Although native 24 bit digital may hold sway... but i haven't given it much time as they are mostly tunes im not into... but Linn has one I may buy that is by the producer of Madonna's ray of light LP.
I think its techno.

to Koobe

vinyl always is associated with warm sound.
thus passionate audiophiles try to capture this kind of sonics in a recordable media . nowdays it is recordable cds , but before it, audio cassettes existed and i still use it now.

vinyl is fragile and common sense mandates to use alternate media in order for constant playing.

thank you aksman!!!!
Posted By: blueplant67 Date: 10 Mar 2010 21:49:13
@Koobe: sure it's digital again... but in a way you won't get from today's music industry. What you get with vinyl rips is a digital representation of the mastering that has been done for the vinyl record, which is often very different (and much more dynamic) than the mastering for CD. It would be possible to produce quite beautiful-sounding CDs, but almost nobody does it (anymore). So vinyl rips are our only way of beating the system of an industry whose only intention is to produce LOUD CDs/mp3 files, not good-sounding music (google "loudness war").

I first heard Diana Krall `Devil may Care` on a compliation album, and immediately rushed out and bought ALL her albums at full price!
I was blown away with the pure quality of the mastering and of course of her performance.
If this rip is `Better` quality ...then WOW, it must sound amazing.
Posted By: Koobe Date: 10 Mar 2010 22:07:51
Thank you all for insightful comments. It makes sense then to rip vinyls instead of going directly to CDs.

Thanks again for this nice piece of music. This is one of the few performances of Krall that I have kept listening and watching over and over again.

Thank You Aksman.

Although Diana Krall has something "un-authentic" to her singing (and behaviour), the rhythm section with Hamilton and Clayton swings so hard it makes you want to jump! ;-)

Thanks, aksman!

Thanks for the digital info regarding vinyl rips. But what I want to know is, what equipment do I need to play these 24-bit 96kHz recordings to hear this "dynamic" range? If I download the 16-bit/44kHz recording and burn it to a CD, will I still hear the same thing as the 24-bit/96kHz? I think not, right? However, would it still sound better than a "conventional" CD i.e. "redbook"(?) version of the same? Lastly, what's "dithering"? Thanks for all the help.

@bugman
To listen to 24/96 files you need at least a regular DVD-player. The 24/96 format is standard in both formats, dvd-a and dvd-v. DVD-Audio solo and Audio-DVD Creatort are nice shareware progs to author music only dvd's. Another way is to listen to these files via network streaming. The quality differences depending on your listening equipment!!!

@all downloaders of the 16/44 version:

Another user let me know the the song "Devil May Care" is 24 instead of 16-bit... I will post a corrected version soon.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
Posted By: bugman Date: 11 Mar 2010 17:54:19
aksman. . . . Thanks for the explanation about the 24/96 format. However, after "unraring" this files, they are then in the "flac" format. In order for me to play them on my DVD player, they have to be converted as I'm pretty sure most DVD players won't play flac files once burned to a DVD. Correct? If that is true, I must convert the flac files to another "lossless" format that can be recognized by my DVD player. I have an iMac (not Intel Mac i.e. doesn't run Windows) running OSX so I usually convert these files to mp4a in iTunes and play them that way thru iTunes. I doubt if my DVD player recognizes mp4a files. Therefore, (1) what lossless format would you recommend to convert these files to and (2) if I do convert them, won't I lose the 24/96 format i.e. won't they revert to 16/44 format once converted? Other readers, feel free to chime in on this please. Thanks again!
Posted By: aksman Date: 11 Mar 2010 20:28:52
bugman... DVD players need uncompressed PCM or Wave files, therefore you have to decode the flac's to wav. Unfortunately I can't offer you any help with Mac's... At least you need a DVD-Authoring program.

Thank you so much for your great work and the incredible sound quality!
Do you have Diana Krall's latest album "Quiet Nights" on Vinyl too?

Thanks again for sharing Jazz masterpieces with us -- and congratulations to your new setup!
Posted By: Dr. Robert Date: 11 Mar 2010 21:25:08
@ bugman

Mac users should use XLD and convert to Apple Lossless. This will retain the full 24/96 sound. XLD will convert to any audio format you like and send the files to iTunes. You can also convert to AAC format to enjoy this on your iTunes. AAC will be maximum 16-bit 48 kHz.

For burning to DVD you can use Toast 10. Toast can make a DVD-V audio only disc from FLAC, but Toast will not burn as gapless (minimum 1 second). That is fine for most studio albums but a bit annoying for a live album. For gapless, you would need a professional DVD authoring program which is expensive and hard to find as bootleg.

If your Mac is near the stereo, the most convenient and great sounding solution is to stream direct from iTunes. Be sure to set the Apple Midi Setup program to output 24/96.

Dr. Robert:
Thanks for your valuable input but I still have a few questions. OK, I can convert Flac files to Apple lossless (mp4a) using XLD and yes, I can stream them to my home stereo in the living room via iTunes from my computer in the den using Airport Express or whatever the device is called these days. However, my question refers to burning these songs to DVD-A (DVD-V?) using Toast (which I have) BUT without losing any of the 24/96 (or higher) sound quality. Can Toast burn the Flac files directly to a DVD-A or DVD-V disc without the quality loss? Lastly, if I were to stream the songs to my stereo via iTunes, where is this "Apple Midi Setup" you refer to as I can't find it in iTunes preferences, etc. Thanks again for your help!

@bugman

Easiest way to burn gapless DVD-V with these files on the MAC is using DVD2One. You need to convert the files to WAV first though if I recall correctly. I so seldom burn nowadays. Here's a link to a well seeded torrent at TPB. http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5110499/DVD2One_2.4.0_w_sn

Apple MIDI Setup is in Applications/Utilities

@ johhenrik

I figured you would have known another good Mac app for burning Audio DVD-V. It looks like a good program. You can NOT load FLAC's as I just confirmed, convert to WAV. I just did a test burn as a diskimage. While getting your settings correct just select to output as an image. Then you can open the IMG file and drag the VIDEO_TS folder onto the Apple DVD Player icon and it should play same as burned disc. DVD2One does burn gapless by default. I could not find any other option for gap time. Click on the Info menu and visit the website for more info.

Be sure to click the link "Download this torrent (magnet link)" Beware of the large DOWNLOAD link that will install crapware.

As for burning an audio only DVD-V with Toast, you need to have Toast 10.0.4 of higher. Earlier versions fail to burn. Click the music icon and select "Music DVD" then the More button. Click Encoding then select Custom. Set Audio Format to PCM @ 24-bit 96 kHz. Set the Menus and other options as desired. Then add your music files, which can be FLAC, WAV or AIFF. The only draw back is the one second gap.

another excellent program which can author a DVD-V or a true DVD-Audio is DVD Audio Solo: http://cirlinca.com/download.htm
it says it is compatible with Mac OS X with VMware Fusion. I can only confirm that the windows version works great.

Thanks aksman,
sounds fantastic.
Posted By: Dr. Robert Date: 12 Mar 2010 20:24:34
@ SuperFuzz

DVD Audio Solo is not available as a native Mac program. It can work under emulation as per the website. "Mac OS X : the applications are known to work on Mac OS X with VMware Fusion and a compatible Microsoft Windows OS.". Emulation is not an option for bugman as he has a PowerPC based Mac. I am not so sure even about DVD2One's PPC compatibility. If it is a UNIX front end PPC users may be left with Toast as the only option.
