| “ | n the development of jazz's avant-garde movement, the late Eric Dolphy remains a pivotal figure. While he expanded the range and possibilities of the alto saxophone and bass clarinet--his technique drew upon vocalized sounds from both those instruments--Dolphy remained grounded in the bebop movement. Simply put, he clung to the swinging theme-solos-theme structure while his innovative, soaring solos embraced freedom. STOCKHOLM SESSIONS is taken from a Swedish television program on which Dolphy and his quintet performed in 1961, and captures Dolphy at his peak. His solos on alto sax and bass clarinet are unfettered, passionate, and hearty, and his flute is possessed of beautiful classical refinement. The band also features some crackling trumpet from Idrees Sulieman and sharp playing from a pair of Scandinavian pianists. On alto sax, bass clarinet and flute, Dolphy stretched the jazz idiom to its limits. A jewel in the Enja catalogue, this album was recorded on his first visit to Europe after having recorded his first three leader albums. | ” |
| “ | Multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy (1928-1964) was a true innovator and pioneer who stretched the harmonic concept of modern jazz to its limits. While rooted in Charlie Parker's style, he developed a new language on saxophone as well as bass clarinet and flute and inspired many reed players by the sheer emotionality of his playing. The album "Stockholm Sessions" was recorded on his first visit to Europe after having recorded his first three leader albums (1960). In Stockholm Dolphy presented the strongest pieces from these albums and was accompanied by some of Scandinavia's best players plus US ex-patriates Idrees Sulieman and Jimmy Woode. Most fascinating are Dolphy's bass clarinet features in the slow blues "Serene" and the unaccompanied Billie Holiday tribute "God Bless The Child." Upon its first release in 1981, "Stockholm Sessions" was voted Jazz Album of the Year by the German Phono Academy. American All Music Guide reads: "This innovative music can serve as a strong introduction of Eric Dolphy's talents to bebop fans." | ” |
