Roberto Fonseca is one of the most dazzling pianists and accompanists in Cuba. Although he hasn't quite delivered the big one yet, Fonseca - best known to us as the young jazz pianist who was parachuted into the Buena Vista Social Club is unquestionably a serious talent in the making.

Dexter Gordon - Sophisticated Giant (1997)

Audio CD (1997) | Label: Columbia/Legacy | Catalog# CK-65295 | 55:57 min.

This excellent Columbia album was recorded less than a year after Dexter Gordon's well-publicized tour of the United States following a dozen years spent living in Europe. With assistance from such other major players as trumpeters Woody Shaw and Benny Bailey, vibraphonist Bobby Gordon sounds in superlative form on Woody Shaw's "The Moontrame," four standards and his own "Fried Bananas." In addition to the original program (which features Dexter with an all-star tentet), the 1997 CD reissue adds two 1979 features for vocalese singer Eddie Jefferson ("Diggin' It" and "It's Only a Paper Moon") which were originally released on Gordon's Great Encounters; trumpeter Shaw and trombonist Curtis Fuller co-star with Gordon. An excellent acquisition.

Genre: Vocal Jazz | Label: Such Production

When the foremost custodian of the Great American Songbook pays tribute to the music's greatest practitioner, the results are guaranteed to be both dynamic and original. Such was indeed the case in 2008 when Michael Feinstein crafted The Sinatra Project, which marked his ninth Concord release and was nominated for a Grammy. Feinstein, long recognized as not only one of the world's finest vocal and piano stylists but also for his tireless efforts to preserve, protect and promote the songs and songwriters that shaped the golden age of American music, wanted to pay tribute to the rich Sinatra legacy, but was determined to do so in a way that was fresh and unique.

Dexter Gordon Quartet - In Iowa 1979 (2008)
Video: NTSC, MPEG2 Video at 7.517 Kbps, 720 x 480 (1.333) at 29.970 fps | Audio: PCM 2 channels at 1 536 Kbps, 48.0 KHz
Genre: Jazz | Label: Discovery Records | Copy: Untouched | Runtime: 60 min. | 3,87 Gb (DVD-5)

Dexter Gordon had such a colorful and eventful life (with three separate comebacks) that his story would make a great Hollywood movie. The top tenor saxophonist to emerge during the bop era and possessor of his own distinctive sound, Gordon sometimes was long-winded and quoted excessively from other songs, but he created a large body of superior work and could battle nearly anyone successfully at a jam session. His first important gig was with Lionel Hampton (1940-1943) although, due to Illinois Jacquet also being in the sax section, Gordon did not get any solos.

Dave Samuels - Natural Selection (1991) {GRP 9656}
EAC | FLAC Image | Cue+Log | Full Scans 600dpi | 308MB + 5% Recovery
MP3 CBR 320 Kbps | 137MB + 5% Recovery
Genre: Fusion, Latin Jazz

Dave Samuels' release offers music that is often more pleasant than it is challenging, but Samuels has an original voice on the marimbas and vibes, the groove tunes are generally quite enjoyable (particularly the calypso "Cara Linda" and the tricky "Knots"), and the leader's solos are uniformly strong. With the help of the Yellowjackets' rhythm section (keyboardist Russell Ferrante, electric bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer William Kennedy) and some guests, this pop/jazz effort is reasonably satisfying and one of Dave Samuels' best solo sets.

Kenny Burrell - 'Round Midnight (1998)
Jazz | EAC Rip | FLAC (image)+CUE+LOG | 203 MB.
300dpi. Complete Scans (PNG) included | WinRar, 3% recovery
Audio CD (1998) | Label: Fantasy/OJC | Catalog# OJCCD-990-2(F-9417) | 37:43 min.

This is a typically tasteful Kenny Burrell record (reissued on CD) with the guitarist mostly emphasizing ballads. Five of the seven songs (which include "Make Someone Happy," "Since I Fell for You" and the theme from "A Streetcar Named Desire") find Burrell assisted by pianist Richard Wyands (who also played electric piano), bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Lenny McBrowne. "'Round Midnight" is played by Burrell with pianist Joe Sample, bassist Johnson and drummer Paul Humphrey while "Blues in the Night" is an unaccompanied guitar solo. Although the music overall is well-played, no real sparks fly and the results often border on being sleepy.

Jeff Lorber Fusion - Galaxy (2011)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 55:29 min | 131 MB
Genre: Smooth Jazz, Fusion | Label: Heads Up Records

As with previous release 'Now is the Time' Jeff Lorber is joined by the Yellowjackets' Jimmy Haslip on bass, Eric Marienthal on saxophones and Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl sharing drumming duties.
Jeff once again takes some of his more popular tunes from the past, like "Wizard Island", "City" and "The Underground" and updates them with the new band. "Essentially this album is a part two", Lorber says. "It features the same rhythm section, but it's even more into the jazz fusion direction. It's more energetic and the performances are tighter." In total, 'Galaxy' includes 11 Jeff Lorber original compositions.
