The Trumpet Summit Meets The Oscar Peterson Big 4 (1990)
Jazz | EAC Rip | APE (image)+CUE+LOG | 229 MB.
600dpi. Complete Scans (JPG) included | WinRar, 3% recovery
Audio CD (1990) | Label: Pablo Today/OJC | Catalog# OJCCD-603-2(2312-114)| 38:08 min.

To call this CD (a reissue of a Pablo date) an all-star session would be an understatement. Joining pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Bobby Durham are three classic trumpeters: Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Freddie Hubbard. They clearly inspire each other (Gillespie flew in from the East Coast specifically for this date) and the music ("Daahoud," "Just Friends," the new blues "Chicken Wings," and a torrid version of "The Champ") has plenty of exciting moments. Other performances from the same date can be heard on The Alternate Blues, another LP reissued on CD through the Original Jazz Classics imprint.

Take a visual and audio trip through the rainforest with Merl Saunders and special friend Jerry Garcia on this exclusive DVD presentation. This album is probably not the best representation of Merl Saunders, whose instrument of choice was the Hammond B-3 organ, but it’s a terrific album worth revisiting, and an album whose creator is worth remembering.

Quincy Jones - The Quintessence (1961) {Impulse!}
EAC 0.99pb4 | FLAC tracks level 8 | Cue+Log+M3U | Full Scans 300dpi | 190MB + 5% Recovery
MP3 CBR 320 Kbps | 78MB + 5% Recovery
Genre: Jazz, Big Band, Swing

The Quintessence is perhaps the most accurate title ever given to a Quincy Jones & His Orchestra recording. Issued in 1961 for Impulse!, this is the sound of the modern, progressive big band at its pinnacle. Recorded in three sessions, the core of the band consists of Melba Liston, Phil Woods, Julius Watkins, and bassist Milt Hinton and pianist Patricia Brown on two sessions, with bassist Buddy Catlett and pianist Bobby Scott on another. The trumpet chairs are held alternately by players like Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Thad Jones, and Snooky Young, to name a few. Oliver Nelson is here, as are Frank Wess and Curtis Fuller. Despite its brevity a scant 31 minutes The Quintessence is essential to any appreciation of Jones and his artistry.

Bob James & Keiko Matsui - Altair & Vega (2011) (DVD5)
Video: NTSC 720x480 (4:3) | Audio: LPCM Stereo | 2.56 GB (RAR 5% Rec.) | Time: 45:10 | Covers
Genre: Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Classical | Label: Tappan Zee Records, Inc./eOne Music | Catalog #: EOM-CD-2125A

This stellar work contains the elements of classical music combined with the influences of both Matsui and James thus creating a work that is partially written and partially improvised adding a lovely depth of feeling and intimate connection of artistic expression. The title of this piano duet release, Altair & Vega, refers to a Japanese folkloric tale about two stars in the galaxy that cross paths only once a year. The bonus DVD of a concert the two performed in 2010 in Pittsburgh at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild clearly reveals a shared admiration and respect.

Dave Brubeck has long served as proof that creative jazz and popular success can go together. Although critics who had championed him when he was unknown seemed to scorn him when the Dave Brubeck Quartet became a surprise success, in reality Brubeck never watered down or altered his music in order to gain a wide audience.
