A Brazilian guitarist, arranger, composer, producer, and multiple Grammy winner, Oscar Castro-Neves is a founding figure of the bossa nova. Following tours with Stan Getz and Sérgio Mendes, he went on to work with Yo Yo Ma, Michael Jackson, Barbra Steisand, Stevie Wonder, João Gilberto, and many others.

Miles Davis was not only one of the most innovative and influential artists in the history of jazz, he was a forward-thinking musician who continued performing right up to the final days of his life. Davis was in fine form in November 1989 (less than two years before his death) when he performed with his group in Paris, and thankfully a video crew was on hand to record the proceedings.

“Passions of a Man” includes every album Mingus made during his first tenure at Atlantic Records. These recordings include “Pithecanthropus Erectus”, “The Clown”, “Blues and Roots”, “Mingus at Antibes”, “Oh Yeah” and “Tonight at Noon”, a compilation of 1957 and 1961 sessions making its first CD appearance. Of the 6 disc set, the last disc is a 75-minute interview with producer Nesuhi Ertegun.

"Walls of Akendora" - ten tunes that range from the classically-inspired to bold and brassy. "Akendora," she explains, "is a fictional place of my own device! It is a place that I go to to find peace and to spend contemplative moments." The "walls" of the title do not refer to any barriers around this haven, but rather milestones. "It's like marking your child's height on the wall. It's about seeing where you have been and where you can go," she explains.

Jazz is no stranger to eclecticism. Musicians have been bending, breaking, reshaping, and reincorporating since the very beginning of jazz history. In fact, departing from jazz tradition might as well be the definition of jazz.

This CD reissue in Joe Pass' "Virtuoso" series differs from the others in that the unaccompanied guitarist performs a dozen originals rather than standards. Pass, who previously had mostly composed blues-oriented pieces, proves to be a surprisingly effective composer, even if his song titles (which include "Sevenths," "Ninths," "Dissonance #1" and "Dissonance #2") are not too inspired. There are more ballads than usual in a Pass solo showcase, but there is enough variety to hold one's interest, even if none of these pieces (which includes one called "Paco DeLucia") caught on.

Born in 1994, Tomer Bar has already published 3 albums as a jazz composer, pianist, and singer. His first album, "Memories" (2007) with bassist Yorai Oron and drummer Eitan Itzkovitz, two of the most busy musicians in Israel, interduced Tomer, with 7 original "straight ahead" jazz compositions.

An ideal companion piece, the juxtaposition of ensemble interaction, sailing and contrasting solos and even-if momentary pauses allows Mal Waldron with the Steve Lacy Quintet (basically add Lacy's longtime collaborator Waldron to the above mix) to continue the "gap concept naturally. The undeniably individual pianist adds a particular depth with resonant multi-textural playing of single notes and colorful yet dramatic chords, a perfect tonal foil at times to Lacy's atonal proclivities. Waldron once said, appropriately enough, "If there's no silence, the sound doesn't mean anything. Starting where "The Thing left off, the 18+ minute Waldron suite "Vio is followed by two of Lacy's originals: "Jump For Victor and a Monk-ish "Blue Wee , with two newly found precious alternate takes of the first two pieces.

One of the all-time great tenor saxophonists, Stan Getz was known as "The Sound" because he had one of the most beautiful tones ever heard. Getz, whose main early influence was Lester Young, grew to be a major influence himself and to his credit he never stopped evolving. Getz had the opportunity to play in a variety of major swing big bands while a teenager due to the World War II draft. He was with Jack Teagarden (1943) when he was just 16, followed by stints with Stan Kenton (1944-1945), Jimmy Dorsey (1945), and Benny Goodman (1945-1946); he soloed on a few records with Goodman.

Since the film was first screened ECM has been deluged with requests for a soundtrack album, so we are making this available simultaneously. Where the film shows the process of music-making, "Sounds and Silence: Music for a Film" includes the music in its completed/produced form. There are two exciting exceptions - tracks from Eleni Karaindrou and orchestra live in concert in Frankfurt with Jan Garbarek and Kim Kashkashian as guests - these pieces have not previously been available on CD.
