@ w0lfgang: although he was HEAVILY compared with Hendrix, you HAVE to check out Stevie Ray Vaughan, unfortunately passed away in 1990. he was honest regarding Hendrix as his main influence covering him beautifully, but he provided great classics by himself ("pride and joy" being his most famous track, his version of "the sky is crying", and his take on "little wing" is breathtaking!!!) also providing a distinctive sound and voice... i would also recommend Gary Moore, Jeff Beck... darn! the list is too large, but you have to check out SRV.
