What a wonderful treat! I can't wait to hear his last interview.

It's a shame that Yoko has recently pawned him off to sell cars, but I doubt any Beatles fan could possibly be surprised.

Thanks Doc! :)

Big thanks for this. Like many, Cosell told me. Listening now...memory(s) lane.

@Doctor Robert

You know, how much I appreciate it, to listen to this (last)interview of John Lennon.
Although I know, I will be very sad afterwards, because Lennon was my idol when I was young.

Thank You, Doctor Robert!

Many thanks for making the complete interview available. In my area the radio did broadcast the BBC interview by Andy Peebles which I taped then, but the cassette is long gone...
A sad day that was.

Thanks Rob for your sterling work. As a massive Beatles fan, I'll have to listen to this - although to be honest in most of my adult years I have thought of the post-Beatles Lennon as a misguided fool (a self-loathing millionaire who wrote songs preaching communist utopianism - "Imagine no possessions" - oh, fuck off to Russia then!), and I don't like most of his solo output.
But his contribution to musical history is undeniable and I'm sure this interview will be very interesting! :)

@ LezDawson

All he was saying was "Give Peace A Chance". I for one would move to Canada if it was not so fucking cold in the winter.

I just pulled my reel to reels of the BBC interview by Andy Peebles on December 6. It's a five hour program. I am now transferring it and I'll get the rip ready for release soon.

Doc you are absolutely amazing! Thank you very much in advance!
(btw. I liked the pix of your tape machines)

This is awesome, and hugely appreciated. For the record, John is my favorite of the solo Beatles.
I'm looking forward to the further five hours that is promised. I do really love and appreciate any audio documentaries on The Beatles.

Very interesting. Thanks Doc!

I have 2 reels. Both are Akai 4000DS that I bought back in 1973. I remember when that Supertape came out. Radio Shack promoted it big time. I bought some 7", 8 track and cassette tapes shortly after they were available. They were extremely "dirty". I had to clean the heads on my decks very often so I didn't buy any more. Maybe you got yours after they worked the bugs out of their manufacturing process. I have a couple 7" reels of Supertape right here. Mine are 1800ft/1.0mil. I remember being concerned that the 0.5 mil tape would stretch or break. Nobody may have ever had one break but I wasn't going to take a chance! lol All the other tapes I bought were BASF, TDK, Memorex and Scotch. That's been a long time ago. :)

Unfortunately, I don't have anything interesting on my tapes so it really doesn't matter. :(

@ 4-F

My first reel to reel was a cheap AKAI I got as HS grad present in '76, probably a similar model. I bought mostly cheap Scotch Dynarange (and BASF) until 1980 when I bought the Realistic deck . All the Dynarange tape got sticky and unplayable by 1982. Luckily none of my Realistic tapes shows any problem with sticky tape and oxide shredding after 30 years. The heads were still clean after transferring five hours of tape. I used long half mil tapes for both shows (RKO and BBC) because I had to work the nights the programs were broadcast and it was the only way I could get the entire program taped. I bought a lot of 2400 and 3600 7 inch tape back then. Almost all play fine today. I used them for time shifting of radio dramas that were very popular back then on the Los Angeles NPR station.

These Akai decks of mine were not very expensive but I really don't remember how they compared in price and quality to others. I bought mine based on the salesman's recommendation. He said to get a better deck I would have to spend a lot more money. These were the best decks for anywhere near the price. What he probably meant was these were the model he got the biggest sales commission.

I haven't played any of my 7" tapes in several years but the last time I played them they were 20 yrs old or more and all that I played were fine. Every manufacturer of tape had several grades of quality. All of my tapes are the more expensive grade. Maybe that is why my Scotch lasted longer than your Scotch. I wonder how well they would play today. I may play one or two the next few days to find out. If they no longer play then I can throw them away and use the space for something else.

That Supertape was supposed to be top quality but I bought some of the first to be sold. It was filthy. According to Radio Shack's promotion, it was made at a brand new factory. I'm sure they got better results after they had some practice. A clerk at Radio Shack told me back then that they had complaints about the tape when it first came out but they had worked out the problems within a few months. I never bought anymore to find out if he was telling the truth. The only reason I bought it in the first place was since it was new they were selling it for half price to promote it. At regular price I preferred to buy from one of the big names in audio tape. My tapes have always been inside the house. I'm betting that yours have too. If they were subjected to temperature extremes as in a storage building I bet that would shorten the life.

@ Rob:

"All he was saying was "Give Peace A Chance""

Trouble is, that wasn't ALL he was saying (despite the song hook!) ;)

Anyhoo, it's late, so I'm gonna settle back now and listen to your fine recording of this genius. I just came back to grab the password - d'oh! Thanks again :)

John Lennon ~ I lost, and the world lost so much by his senseless death.
