Released 1997 | Label ECM 1626/27 | Scan inc.

Annette Peacock is a singer/pianist whose influence outweighs the popularity of her music. Peacock was one of the first singers to incorporate the use of live electronics with her singing, and her compositions have been performed by talents as diverse as Paul Bley, Bill Bruford, Pat Metheny and Militant The Madd Rapper. Her pieces are spacious, austere, unsentimental and oddly lyrical.
On this two-CD set, the keenly empathetic trio of Marilyn Crispell, Gary Peacock (Annette's former husband) and the drummer Paul Motian (who has played extensively with both Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett) explore the composer's unique catalog. Highlights include the sublime, graceful ballad "Open, To Love," and the quietly stirring "Albert's Love Ballad," an elegy to the free jazz icon Albert Ayler. Crispell can and has moved mountains with her sometimes volcanic approach -- on NOTHING EVER WAS she plays with a combination of steely resolve, vivid harmonic boldness, and wry, quiet poise.
