| “ | A forgotten film (I think it's been on UK television once, so that qualifies as forgotten). It had a troubled production, poor box office and perhaps the subject matter of what happens to us during and after death was a bit too uncomfortable as entertainment. This film was no Ghost despite the optimistic ending. However it did have a good score composed by James Horner. It's a finely judged score that reflects the subject matter (fear of death and what may lay beyond) perfectly. It's not easy listening by a long way. Some of it is beautiful, especially with the choirs, but some of it is downright scary. There's no Omenesque "Ave Santini" here, but there are times that it will make you jump if you've got the volume up high! The "Main Title" opens deceptively with what I can best describe as a heavenly choir sound. It then builds up to a big crescendo with sinister undertones, before the choir returns to calm things down. "Lillian's Heart Attack" is a scary track with its blasts of percussion and brass, until it builds to a big brass climax before becoming gentle again. "Gaining Access To The Tapes" is a good track, which reminded me in parts of Goldsmith's Capricorn One. The most melodic and pleasant piece of the score is "Michael's Gift To Karen." It starts as a slow tension piece, but soon moves into a lovely string melody with choir before piano takes over. It's a bit of a relief from the frenzy that surrounds it. "Final Playback" is in direct contrast to the previous cue. Heavy choir sound and sudden blasts of growling brass and high string make this an uncomfortable listening experience. "Race For Time" starts gently, then builds up pace and becomes classic chase music. It bears some similarity to "Gaining Access To The Tapes." "Final Playback/End Title" starts as if Horner had recorded the orchestra while they were warming up their instruments. The good news is that it soon moves into something gentler and melodic with the choir. The piano tune returns, but it all ends with the choir eerily fading out the track. There's not much here that you'll come away whistling except maybe parts of "Michael's Gift To Karen." This, as I've said, is a score that demands your attention. It certainly won't wash over you in 40 minutes of easy listening. In parts it's eerie, occasionally beautiful, sometimes alarming, but always interesting – perfect for the subject matter of the film. This is a score that you'll have to listen to a few times to appreciate. Your initial reaction maybe one of horror, but bear with it and you'll be rewarded. However, it's not a score that I'd recommend to newcomers to Horner's work. | ” |
