This 5-CD box set in ECM’s Old & New Masters series, issued in time for Charles Lloyd’s 75th birthday in March 2013, looks back at the beginning of the great saxophonist’s association with ECM. It includes the albums “Fish Out Of Water”, “Notes from Big Sur”, “The Call”, “All My Relations” and “Canto”. All five albums were recorded in Oslo (between 1989 and 1996) with Manfred Eicher producing and they chart a particularly rich and creative period in Lloyd’s musical life. “Fish Out Of Water” marked Lloyd’s comeback, after long years in retreat from the jazz scene. He was partnered by Scandinavian players who had been inspired by his trailblazing music of the 1960s and who were able both to support and challenge him.

One of the best lyric tenors in the world in the second half of the twentieth century is the Spanish Alfredo Kraus (1927-1999), also considered the greatest in bel canto of his generation. The great master and lyric teacher was no friend to make concessions out of the musical repertoire that was more suited to his voice and style, but this album, recorded and released in 1965 and reissued in the 90s, is one of those rare samples. Kraus is accompanied by Tuna of Fray Luis de León College of Madrid and plays a total of 12 items of typical rondallas.

Admirers of the string quartets of Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, and Maurice Ravel will be happy to discover the refined string quartets of Charles Koechlin, a contemporary of those composers who wrote in a rather similar vein. These attractive chamber works, like the rest of Koechlin's oeuvre, are quite obscure and had been unduly neglected until the Ardeo Quartet chose to record them for its debut CD on Ar Re-Se. The String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 51, is dated 1911-1913, though it appears to have gestated since 1902, and the String Quartet No. 2, Op. 57, was mostly composed between 1911 and 1916, though its sketches show some material going back to 1909; both works therefore partake of musical styles developed between fin de siècle Impressionism and the later ....... We all know how busy Robert Berry (Hush, GTR, 3, solo, Ambrosia, producer), Gary Pihl (Sammy Hagar, Boston), David Lauser (Sammy Hagar) and Alan Fitzgerald (Montrose, Gamma, Night Ranger) are, so it doesn’t come as a real surprise that we had to wait nine years for a follow-up to the wonderful “Missing Piece” album.
The songwriting for this third album already started in 2000, but things were put on ice when the guys didn’t succeed in writing songs that were good enough. Things gained momentum again some three years ago, when Gary Pihl and Robert Berry started to exchange ideas for new songs by means of MP-3 files that they sent to each other through e-mail. What came out of these writing sessions sounded a lot fresher than the material that was written immediately after the release of “Missing Piece” and so the light turned to green for the writing and recording of a third Alliance album.
