Allmusic.com rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars Review!

With some of his clearest, strongest singing in years and a collection of terse, honest originals, as well as a cover of the Slickers' reggae classic "Johnny Too Bad," Grace & Danger shows John Martyn at the top of his game.
- Brett Hartenbach/AMG

Grace And Danger is a 1980 album by John Martyn.

The album was written and recorded while John Martyn was in the process of divorcing from his wife Beverley and the songs strongly reflect the emotional upheaval that he was experiencing at the time. Phil Collins played drums and provided backing vocals. The release of the album was delayed by Island Records for a year because Chris Blackwell, the label owner (and friend of both John and Beverley) found the album too depressing. Producer Martin Levan said of the delay that "the messages I was getting back was that Chris [Blackwell] felt it was too sad and he didn't want to put it out. He felt it too depressing and didn't want it released." Speaking in 1981, Martyn captured his frustration at the situation, "I freaked: 'Please get it out! I don't give a damn how sad it makes you feel - It's what I'm about: direct communication of emotion."

When released, Rolling Stone described the album as "a very strong outing for John Martyn, placing him in a class with such intelligent eclectics as Joan Armatrading and Joni Mitchell."

The album cover was created by UK photographer/artist Sandy Porter.

Thank you aksman, for posting John Martyn. Very few people know him, so it is very nice to have him here. Although this a very "sad" album (well not really music for a rainy, dark November night, if you know what I mean), John Martyn always warms my heart. It is sad, that he passed away before his time in January 2009.

Somewhere over the rainbow, John!

I was not aware of this artist. If Rolling Stone puts him in the same company as Joni Mitchell and Joan Armatrading, then I am sure this will be a very pleasing and rewarding new experience. Thanks for again for another brilliant share.

Thanks Aksman for this great vinyl John Martyn rip.The Man is a legend in this city (Glasgow) I saw him many times at the Glasgow City Hall in the early 70's and live he was always intimate, personable and very very funny with his between song patter.
Dr Robert you will be in for a treat when you get round to hearing "Bless The Weather" and "Solid Air" two of my favorite John Martyn Albums. Thanks again to both of you for all the selfless vinyl ripping you supply us with.

Such a heart-breakingly beautiful album, and one of your better rips, Aksman. This is gorgeous. Hurt In Your Heart still destroys me. John Martyn can be tough to get into, but this is definitely the one to have. Thank you very much.
