Amparanoia is the pseudonym of Spanish singer/guitarist Amparo Sanchez combining her first name with the phrase 'paranoia'. It was also the name of the band she fronted from 1996 to 2006. Debut album, El Poder de Machín, has been described as being "bright, exuberant... with a heavy Latin influence" whereas the 2002-released Somos Viento has been called "a more acoustic blend of Cuban and reggae forms".Amparo Sánchez ranks as the queenpin of the internationalist Euro-mix force gathering steam behind Manu Chao, a close friend and sometime collaborator. It's been nearly a decade since Charlie Hunter collaborated with other guitarists (the great T.J. Kirk band of the mid-'90s), but Earth Tones finds him revisiting the format with very different results. Hunter got together with legendary Jamaican guitarists Ernest Ranglin and Chinna Smith for an easygoing set of (mostly) covers that largely tread the kind of Jamaican-flavored jazz that Ranglin's been known for for years. There are some reggae and dub elements here and there, but you'd be hard-pressed to call it a reggae album. Recorded with very few overdubs, the cooperative arrangements are perfect, with plenty of space for everyone and the players almost finishing each other's thoughts. Hunter's guitar always has a bit of Leslie effect on it (remember, he's throwing down the basslines at the same time!), Chinna sticks to acoustic, and Ranglin plays with his trademark clean electric sound, so it's really easy to pick out who's doing what and compare their different styles.

ASM’s debut full-length album ‘Platypus Funk’ was allegedly created by the 3 young migratory Platypi Green-T, FP, and Fade near a lazy stream in a forest where it’s always summer in high school. Having slipped into the tributary off the mainstream by accident, the Platypi soon began indulging in the surrounding greenery and floating through the peaceful waters, spending their nights jamming with the jazzed-out local Echidna population, and they decided to stick around. After excavating a crate of dusty records stacked with roots reggae, rare soul and raw funk from the muddy river banks, the Platypi soon got to work building a recording nest from whatever flotsam came their way. After two sun-drenched years, they sent a wooden cassette of their recordings downstream, in the hopes that others would stumble across it and join their tranquil commune. What was discovered on the tape marked ‘Platypus Funk’ was a pure manifestation of the ASM Platypus vibe: rhyme-flipping nerdery, deep funk grooves, soulful horn-lines and neck-snapping boom-bap drums. The features list reads as a testament to the inspirations and companions that have encountered the ASM Platypi on their path. They include Dj Vadim (BBE Music), Sadat X (Brand Nubian), Wildchild (Stones Throw), Kid Kanevil (Firstword), Bonobo (Tru-Thoughts) and Mr Mattic (Wax Tailor crew).
