In 1984, Cale released the album Caribbean Sunset back-to-back with John Cale Comes Alive, a live LP showcasing his in-concert strengths with the same band. Though he self-defeatingly begins and ends Comes Alive with half-assed studio efforts, that's the extent of the disappointment.

The live core of the album consists of gripping versions of vintage material like "Fear" and "Leaving It Up to You," a death-rattling "Heartbreak Hotel" performed solo at the electric piano, a bouncily tongue-in-cheek "Waiting for the Man" as a tip of the hat to his old Velvet Underground bandmate Lou Reed, and a couple of Sabotage Live songs, minus the overly metallic sound that made them almost unlistenable on that LP. Cale should record all his material this way: live and with a solid band.

This album was never reissued on cd. However, two tracks are included on the Seducing Down the Door compilation set: "Waiting For the Man" and "Ooh La La" (albeit in a very different mix).
