Leslie West - Alligator (1986)

It's funny that this is considered rare, because that means someone must be looking for it. And having just had a listen, I have to wonder why. It's alright, but it's not the best Leslie West by any account. First problem for me is it's just far too 80s. Granted it's at the tail end, but that awful echoey production rears its hideous head in more than a few places. I personally hate the Steinberger he plays as well. I wish he'd pick up his old Les Paul Jr again, because that cliched 80s power metal tone is exactly that - a cliche. The tracks are alright, nothing that makes you cringe, but nothing that really gets your foot stamping either. I was annoyed though at his version of Free's "The Stealer". It's awful. Pales in comparison to the orignal, and then some. I'd tell you to buy his debut and Mountain catalogue instead, but if you're trying to track down this rarity, you've probably already got them. In sum - a rare gem this is not.
