| “ | A strange one for sure. Contains a few of Neil's lesser known classics (Mideast Vacation, Too Lonely, Prisoner of Rock n Roll) as well as one of his all-time worse songs, Inca Queen, which still manages to have a gorgeous melody. Around the World is sung with great passion & anger. Very much a mixed bag. But if you're a fan, you'll have to own it eventually. | ” |

| “ | Life is a 1987 album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Young's first with his erstwhile backing band since 1981's Re-ac-tor. The first three tracks all handle the topic of world politics, and ponder the role of the United States in the world. "Long Walk Home," for example, empathizes with troops under deployment overseas. Though in response to the foreign policy issues of the time (Beirut, Qaddafi), Young found new meaning in these songs in the context of the war on terror and the occupation of Iraq. During his "Freedom of Speech" tour in support of Living with War, Young posted videos of these three songs on his website, [1]. The "Mideast Vacation" and "Long Walk Home" videos were later released on the DVD included with the album Living with War: In the Beginning. The performances are from his 1986 tour with Crazy Horse and are labeled as being "From Neil Young Archives Volume 3," a highly anticipated but perennially unreleased series of box sets chronicling Young's career. Most of the album was recorded live in concert at the Universal Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA on November 18 and 19, 1986. "Mideast Vacation", "Around The World" and "When Your Lonely Heart Breaks" were recorded on the 18th, "Inca Queen", "Too Lonely" and "Prisoners Of Rock 'N' Roll" were recorded on the 19th. "Long Walk Home" is a mix of recordings from both these dates. This was Young's last release on the Geffen label. The title and cover portray Young a prisoner of his own music. The number 5 is scratched into the wall of his jail cell - the very number of albums Young would release under Geffen Records. ~ Wikipedia | ” |
| “ | In the fall of 1978, Neil Young undertook a North American tour with Crazy Horse, then added overdubs to new songs recorded on the tour for one of his best albums, Rust Never Sleeps. In the fall 1986, he did the same thing, but Life, Young's first album with Crazy Horse since 1981's Re-ac-tor, was not one of his best albums. It was, however, better than most of the other albums he had made in the 1980s, and it was the first really interesting album he'd made in a long time. Despite the return to Crazy Horse, Young continued to use some of the production techniques from Landing on Water, especially the loud drums and the synthesizers. But he mixed things up, including acoustic-based songs such as "Long Walk Home" (which recalled "After the Gold Rush") and "Inca Queen" (the third in his series of long, atmospheric songs about the Incas) and rockers like "Prisoners of Rock 'n' Roll." The last, with its attacks on "record company clowns" and chorus "that's why we don't want to be good," seemed intended as the theme song for the Rusted-Out Garage Tour on which it was performed and served as a reminder that Young was still at odds with Geffen Records, which he left after releasing this album. Despite the criticism he had endured for his support of President Reagan's military buildup, Young had foreign policy on his mind in the action-movie-in-song "Mideast Vacation" and in "Long Walk Home," which addressed military misadventures from Vietnam to Beirut. It could be argued that Young was repeating himself on much of this material and that the album was typically uneven. But Life was an encouraging step back to the tried and true for an exploratory artist who finally seemed to have realized that he had experimented too much for his own good. ~ AMG | ” |

Another great post.
Oh yes Puschkin, I can certainly rip my CD of "Ragged Glory" and upload this beauty real soon, sometime next week...okay for you? "Funny" enough, I don't have "Freedom", nor as a CD or as a download in lossless format. Maybe plonker, toejam, aksman - or someone else - can help us with a copy of that CD..?
Unfortunately i got 'Freedom' LP and mp3 only, trying to d/l it in lossless. If i manage to complete it, i'll put it here. Cheers!
Look forward to seeing "Ragged Glory"...next week is great!
Best of luck with "Freedom", just haven't seen a copy as lossless, been hunting for it myself for a long time.
Yeah, wouldn't it be great if everyone ripped their entire CD-collection and posted them here at AVAX...that would be heavenly!
