Wow! That's a great compliment but I found this a few days ago floating around in cyberspace. I mostly have odds and ends type cds. I don't buy these killer cds because I figure someone else will buy it and rip it. ... And here it is! I just rip a few of my somewhat less popular cds to add to these great ones that someone else ripped. :)

You can't buy them all!!

Great! Not that it is a big deal but I generated the MP3 files from the flac with lame 3.97 codec at the best quality settings and updated the tags to include ID3v1, ID3v2 and APEv2. That's the way all my shares that lossless and MP3 are done.

There seems to be a misconception that 320 is the best quality. If you do some research you will find VBR is superior.

@grubbo - If you mean mp3 vbr, it's quite rubbish, and lots of problems with streaming and compatibility unless is 192kbps. If you mean ogg and others, they are better but you won't be able to play them with many hi-fi's, etc [i should know, it happened to me]. I'm sure the uploader knows this, he's just offering the safest bet, plus the lossless rip for people [like me] who prefers the best quality.

@Juandocomando - I have ripped and shared many CDs and a few vinyl LPs but just for the record, this one isn't my rip. I do not want to take credit for some other person's efforts. :)

As far as the vbr vs 320 CBR thing goes, I think BOTH of you are right. It is my understanding that VBR at the highest settings using Lame encoder is a smaller size and superior sound quality than 320cbr. However, years ago certain hardware wouldn't correctly read the track time for one thing. I would have a 3 minute song that showed to be 57 minutes and crap like that. There were other issues with SOME vbr files I found on the net but I don't remember what all the issues involved. That was years ago. I got turned off by vbr several years ago and have stayed with 320 ever since even though those problems may have been resolved. I would also like to point out that I just go with the trend. If you notice, almost everyone else does lossless and 320 if they provide lossless and lossy. I don't recall seeing anyone post lossless and vbr. If 80% of the publishers switch to VBR then I will too. Otherwise, I will hang in there with 320 CBR.

320 CBR is the best of the MP3 settings.

It gives the whole 'hog'.

VBR is crap because it does not reflect the true sound at all and is now frowned upon.

firepower offers the best of both.

@SanDiego: I don't know what the deal is today with filepost. My account has worked well but today it is very slow. Anyway, I had 3 premium accounts a couple of weeks ago but now they are gone. I bought a filepost account and that is the only one I have right now. Most of the hosts have stopped allowing remote uploads. It took me 10 hours to upload this and the Beach Boys Singles collection. To answer your question, I may at some time offer additional hosts but for right now this is it. :(

No problem, firepower, I sympathize with your plight. After 50 (fifty!) minutes of downloading the first file of disc 1, I checked with my local library and they JUST got it in! Oh happy day!! My heart goes out to you and anyone having to upload to filepost. It's even worse, sheer torture, for non-premium downloaders. Good luck!

PS: have you considered rapidshare? even as a non-premium user, I've downloaded a bunch of old avax stuff that's still on their sites and it's damned fast. You don't need a premium account to upload there and it's got to be faster than this pig. Just a thought.

I had a RS account for many years but they drove me nuts with changes to the terms of service and deleting my files. Filepost is required at avax and to have mirrors is optional. With my upload speed as slow as it is I have to have a combo of hosts that allow remote uploads. I have a terrible internet connection but I generally got 100 to 150k for free. For the first time, today my premium downloads are slow too so maybe they are having issues that soon will be resolved. My connection is so bad that I only got 350k as a premium user on RS. I have been getting almost that much on FilePost. My brother has a filepost premium and his runs about 3 times as fast as mine. Smoke signals would be an upgrade my internet connection.

I need to check with my library and see what I can round up down there. I have never done that but I know others do it all the time. The library is only 5 minutes from my house. :)

firepower and I both had premium accounts with Rapidshare for many years.

However when they began messing about with 'Rapids' they made themselves very unpopular.

I very much doubt that firepower would even bother with having 'rapidshare' appear in his

address bar ever again too.

I believe firepower speaks for himself quite well and doesn't need an "interpreter" like you with an axe to grind against a file host. His explanation is quite sensible and well understood. Rapidshare did play games with their service agreements, etc. But I didn't get any impression that he would "even bother with having 'rapidshare' appear in his address bar again." Pure childish nonsense and he seems much more of a class act than that.

My local suburban libraries (a number of them are within a 25-mile radius of me) have been a godsend, especially now. They have a wealth of CDs and DVDs in every category. Depending on where you live, you can do an online search through the library system in your area (centralized database) and have titles delivered to your closest branch, free of charge. It's awesome, to say the least. Hope you find some "treasures" there...it sure beats the agony of downloading, especially nowadays :=)

@Zedy: Yes sir, you are right. RS worked well for me for downloading but I had to read the terms of service daily to keep up. They tinkered with the uploader and it frequently wouldn't work. Support was non existent. I got tired of uploading through my browser, 1 file at a time. Files deleted frequently. I hate to say "never" and have to eat crow but I will be one of the last to switch back to RS. Simply said, if everybody goes to RS I will have to decide if I want to "download only" or quit altogether because is not likely I will post anything else with those guys. They were on my last nerve before they went to "Rapids". I was actually glad they shot themselves in both feet with that move. Almost everybody dropped them in a matter of only a month and it made it easy for me to not renew my account. /end rant. lol

@SanDiego: I am no class act! lol You must have me confused with someone else! :)
I never thought about browsing the library online. I'm not much with using a computer except for what I am doing now. That's a great idea. I'm going to check that out tonight and see if I can browse their stuff. btw, I lived in San Diego for about a month or two ..... forty years ago. Wow!! It has been that long. @SanDiego: My library is not that big and doesn't have branches. You can't see very well what they have but you can search for a specific title or author. I got no matches for Beach Boys or Lobo and only got one match for Beatles. I may drive over there one day in the near future but it looks like the pickings are going to be slim. lol

I am going to drive over there to see. Maybe they have "The Complete Motown Singles Collection, Vols 1-11B". I'd drive overseas for a chance to rip those 65cds. :)

Sorry your files are gone, after all those hours of uploading, that sucks :(( It's a combination of the current hosting sites' legal problems and that really stinky host Avax has saddled everyone with.

The good news on the Beach Boys front is that my library had the complete NINE CD "Smile Sessions" set, awesome! I'd gladly upload it to several hosts here, including the mandatory filepost, but don't have posting privileges. So I've decided to share it in a much more "open" environment, if you git mah drift :) Watch for it there.
