Genesis - Genesis [1999 VJCP 68107 Japan Mini-LP Remaster] (1983)
EAC Image (FLAC+CUE+LOG) | 288 MB | Covers (300 dpi) included
Genre: Progressive Rock

Review by Bob McBeath @ Prog Archives:

With this album, Genesis pulled in the reins and reverted in part to the style their traditional fan base expected. “Home by the sea” ranks as one of their best, and most progressive tracks, with superb keyboards in particular from Tony Banks. Nominally two separate tracks, the second part being “Second home by the sea”, it in reality a 10 minute track which ranks alongside the band’s better known classics.

The opening track, “Mama” has a menacing feel, a bit like a darker version Phil Collin’s first solo track “In the air tonight”. While the track was commercial enough to become a major hit single for the band, it retains sufficient credibility to stand alongside other Genesis singles such as “I know what I like”, and “Follow you follow me”.

The other track which I particularly enjoy is “Silver rainbow”. While it has a fairly lightweight feel to it, the structure is slightly more complex than the pop songs Genesis had moved towards, with some excellent keyboard work around the choruses.

There are certainly a number of lighter tracks with leanings towards singles, but all in all, one of the better post Gabriel and Hackett era Genesis albums.

Tracklisting:
1. Mama (6:49)
2. That's All (4:26)
3. Home By The Sea (5:08)

6. Taking It All Too Hard (3:58)
7. Just A Job To Do (4:47)
8. Silver Rainbow (4:30)
9. It's Gonna Get Better (5:01)

Total Time: 46:01

Line-Up:

Thanks for all your great posts.

I ran auCDtect 0.8.2 as I always do and it says this is MPEG. Do you know why this happens?

Cheers

Programs like auCDtect, TAU Analyzer, and Audiochecker are not 100% accurate in their readings of MPEG or CDDA. What they do is analyze the waveform and match it against frequency range templates and if the high end dropoff is under a certain point, then it tells you MPEG. The problem with this is that a real MPEG encoding will not only have the decreased upper range cut off, but will have significant cuts in frequency at the 16 khz, 18 khz ranges as well, due to quantization and ATH (Adjusted Threshold of Hearing algorithms). If a file was truly encoded from MPEG, the waveform frequency would drop significantly (by about half) between the 16 khz and 17 khz mark, then again at the 19 khz mark, finally flatlining at 20 khz. You'll notice from the following frequency graph (for track 6 of this release), measured by TAU Analyzer (TAU uses the same method as auCDtect, as it is made by the same company) that this does not occur at all, in fact the frequency graph shows a very solid waveform graph all the way to 20.1 khz, no dips or cuts at all. At this point it drops sharply, but never flatlines until 21.5 khz. See here:

If this were really MPEG, the waveform would look MUCH messier and choppier. While I will say that this was a very poor mastering job, probably because of the source tapes used, I am not convinced in the slightest that this was not ripped from a pressed CD.
