Universal Records is about to uncork a reissue campaign on November 21 that will give Rush fans a few more 5.1 digital surround sound reboots of albums from the band's classic Mercury Records catalog. The "Sector" Rush reissues will collect all 15 Mercury-era Rush releases in three separate sets, each containing five albums, with a total of 18 discs overall. All of the albums have been freshly remastered and formatted with packaging that mimics the original vinyl LP. Additionally, updated booklets for each release will contain previously unseen photographs along with the original credits and album lyrics. The real meat of these new reissues though will be the brand new 5.1 versions of three signature Rush albums - "Fly By Night", "A Farewell To Kings", and "Signals". There's one hitch, though - the three new releases will be divided up as bonus DVD discs, packaged one per volume across the three volumes of "Sector" reissues.

Sector 1: Limited six disc (five CDs + DVD) box set from the Canadian Rock trio. Contains the albums Rush, Fly By Night, Caress Of Steel, 2112 and All The World's A Stage plus the DVD-Audio mix of Fly By Night. Each Sector contains five of their 15 Mercury albums in chronological order, all transferred to high resolution 96kHz/24-bit and digitally premastered for optimal quality.

Sector 2: Limited six disc (five CDs + DVD) box set from the Canadian Rock trio. Contains the albums A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Exit...Stage Left plus the DVD-Audio mix of A Farewell To Kings. Each Sector contains five of their 15 Mercury albums in chronological order, all transferred to high resolution 96kHz/24-bit and digitally premastered for optimal quality.

Sector 3: Limited six disc (five CDs + DVD) box set from the Canadian Rock trio. Contains the albums Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire and Show Of Hands plus the DVD-Audio mix of Signals. Each Sector contains five of their 15 Mercury albums in chronological order, all transferred to high resolution 96kHz/24-bit and digitally premastered for optimal quality. In addition, each volume includes an exclusive booklet packed with unpublished photos, original album lyrics and credits, and features one album specifically remixed on DVD in high resolution 96 kHz/24-bit, 5.1 surround sound and stereo, compatible with both DVD Audio players and DVD-Video players. Each album is packaged in a replica vinyl mini-jacket of the original album release with all 3 sets forming a Rush CD road case.

@ALLexxess
Not only your box has a little defects - for more info read the internet sources, for example - the customer's review at amazon:
Please be aware of the following before purchasing this:

Sector 1)
Fly By Night consistently has glitches all the way through, with the audio disappearing from one of the channels. Occurring at least once (sometimes twice) on all but one of the tracks.

Sector 2)
The Hi-Res stereo version of Closer To The Heart is not a stereo master but rather an erroneous version of the front 2 channels of the 5.1 mix. There are also questionable decisions made to the remix of Cygnus X-1.

Sector 3)
The wrong mixes were used on at least 7 of the Hold Your Fire tracks.

Each box is flawed in some way.

If this doesn't bother then go nuts......

Thank you very much. Even with the questions, I'll have to grab this and see how different the mixes are, and how squashed the sound really is. They're one of my favorite groups, and hope their albums will eventually be remastered in an audiophile sort of way. Perfecta, this must have taken hours to upload, so thank you very very much!

Thanks for this! I agree with kwork, I too am interested to see what kind of a job Universal did for these remasters.

This release is a huge disappointment. I am a massive Rush fan and when I saw this I thought WOW! but all is not as it seems ..
1) The albums may well have been re-mastered in 24bit/96kHz, but to get them on CD they still have to be converted down to 16bit/44.1kHz, so no real quality gain there, and I already have bought most of the Rush re-masters, no need to buy them again.
2) The DVDs presented here only have the 5.1 track (check with VLC player->Tools->Code Information). Where is the stereo 24/96 audio stream? I know it says stereo on the menu, but it ain't there. If it's not on the original then I won't be buying it (was it omitted from the rip to save space?)
Posted By: zoan06 Date: 31 Mar 2012 18:06:14
Does your re-up have the corrected Fly By Night and Hold Your Fire, or is it the same as before? Doesn't bother me either way, just curious.

VLC is no good for playing DVD-A!
Not only does it all too ofren downsample hi res music but it does not even see MLP.
Please play the DVD-A in foobar, you'll get all the hi res audio, with no downsampling** but no video menus.
For the ultimate experience you need to burn it to DVD-A and play in a DVD-A player. I dunno if the DVDFab rip to iso is supplied here or not.
If it is, then it is simple to use (Free) IMGburn to to burn the iso to a blank DVD-R.

** you will need to properly configur your foobar200 with all the right components inthe right place before it will play MLP 5.1
Google is your friend.

@perfecta
Check your facts before you call someone incompetent. Mount the DVD ISO file (I use Virtual CloneDrive) and then examine it with something like DVD Shrink. You will see that there are only 2 audio streams available, both are AC3, one is 5.1 and the other is 2 channel. AC3 is NOT lossless. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Digital

@ManWhoCan
VLC is perfectly capable of playing 24/96 files, as is WinAmp (my other PC player of choice). I'm not interested in 5.1 or any other surround sound. I just want to rip the files to hi-res FLAC and play them from my Cambridge Audio NP30 via optical into my Musical Fidelity V-DAC II and then into my hi-fi system. As I stated earlier, the DVD rip does not contain the 24/96 stereo audio stream. AC3 is a lossy format.

@dr_phlox
Talk you the last time. Don't be a rich, but incompetent man. Read the exact sciences.

useful link for you:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meridian_Lossless_Packing

and "LPCM Enhanced Stereo (1536 Kbps)" means just 16/48000. ALWAYS.
Posted By: Killroy Date: 02 Apr 2012 13:16:22
I already have bought most of the Rush re-masters, no need to buy them again.

The '97 remasters are an awful brick-walled mess...Some of the worst sounding CD's I ever heard. I would have thrown them out if I wasn't able to sell them. These new ones are much better sounding. They are not perfect (DR still sucks) but if for some reason you don't want to get the original (superior) CD releases, these new ones will do fine.
Posted By: dr_phlox Date: 02 Apr 2012 14:57:42
@perfecta
I do know what MLP is. My point is that there is NOT an MLP stream on the DVD rip - just the two AC3 (lossy) streams. If you want to be childish and trade insults from behind a faceless computer screen, then fine. You know nothing about me as regards my wealth or competencies so why bother commenting in the first place. Goodbye.

Thanks for sharing...
Posted By: marshallcroew Date: 05 Apr 2012 10:36:31
dr_phlox. Where on the disk have you been looking? The AC3 streams are coded into the VOB containers (files) in the VIDEO_TS folder. The high-res audio however is contained in the AOB containers (files) in the AUDIO_TS folder (which is empty or absent on DVD video disks).

I'm not sure about Shrink, but the vast majority of DVD-ripping software only reads the VIDEO_TS folder, since they can't decode the AOB containers. This is the most probable reason why you've "tricked" into believing that there are only AC3 streams available.

I haven't found any program that can decode and unpack the AOB containers, and convert them to (for example) 6-channel wave files.

Also, the DVD-Audio format is, for all intents and purposes, dead. Only a few higher-end DVD-hometheater systems supported it and I've found no Blu-ray player that does.
Posted By: dr_phlox Date: 05 Apr 2012 15:25:35
@marshallcroew

Thanks for your very helpful comments (unlike some others on this board). You are absolutely spot on - DVD Shrink cannot see the AOB files. I got hold of a program called DVD Audio Extractor and that did the business for me. I was able to get the stereo 24bit/96kHz streams off and convert them into FLAC, they play fine on my system. Thanks again.

@perfecta
I suppose thanks are in order for the upload, even though your comments left much to be desired.

@marshallcroew, "Only a few higher-end DVD-hometheater systems supported it and I've found no Blu-ray player that does". Eh? First up, Oppo's BDP-83 and BDP-93 support ALL formats, Blu-ray, DVD-V AND DVD-A and SACD! The 93 is also Blu-ray 3D!

There are numerous DVD-A players ranging from as low as £500 ($750) and these provide more than adequate sound quality. I personally wouldn't recommend anything below £800 ($1400) but that's my personal preference. There are many seriously high end all-in-one players, and to say that DVD-A was only offered on a few high end players is misleading as best, wildly inaccurate at worst.

Tbh the stereo on the DVD-A's on here is NOT hi-res audio. The poster was correct. As another poster pointed out the bit rate is only 1536kbps.
Posted By: marshallcroew Date: 06 Apr 2012 09:28:28
@Fathomie. Perhaps you have more money than is good for you (i.e. you've lost sight of it's value). DVD players for £500 - £800 definitely IS high-end. Most consumer-players, these days, goes for £50 - £100. A £200 player would be regarded as quite expensive by most people. The same could be said for your BD players. $499 - $999 is a very high-end price today.

If you read my posting, I said that "I've found no Blu-ray player that does" and I've never heard of Oppo before. However, reading about them makes it clear that they are manufacture luxury products and not consumer products. I seriously doubt that many consumers would pay $999 for a 3D capable BD-player today. $200 - $300 would be a more probable assumption. None of the "majors" (Panasonic, Sony, Phillips, Samsung, LG, etc.) supports the DVD-Audio format though.

So, my claim that DVD-Audio support requires a high-end player still holds true. Please, tell us about a DVD-player for less than £100 that supports DVD-Audio.

"The stereo on the DVD-A's on here is NOT hi-res audio." On this one you're correct. A bit rate of 1536kbps for PCM indicates 48kHz/16-bit which is not regarded as high-res.

@dr_phlox. Many thanks for the tip about "DVD Audio Extractor". I shall check it out.
Posted By: dr_phlox Date: 06 Apr 2012 10:30:37
@Fathomie

I was wrong in my original post about the audio streams. There is a high-res audio stream on the DVD, I just couldn't see it at first when I was using DVD Shrink.

I mounted the ISO file with "Virtual CloneDrive" and then using "DVD Audio Extractor" allowed me to extract the 2ch audio stream. Its bit rate is reported as 4608kbps, bit depth is 24 and sample rate is 96kHz, definitely hi-res! There is also a 6ch stream which could be extracted, but I'm only interested in stereo.

Hi Dr Phlox, I wasn't going on your post, only on what was in the text above for each disc. I certainly wouldn't waste my time downloading a low bit rate stereo track so thanks for the heads up.

Hi Marshalcroew, please spare me your righteous indignation. I don't give a flying one what your view of hi end is, £500-800 is the industry accepted price level for mid market products. For hifi or AV anything below £200 has a another name, 'junk'.

There are Panasonic, Pioneer, Denon, Onkyo, DVD-A players out there, you won't find many Phillips or Sony ones as they supported SACD instead! The lowest priced ones I found were Denon who knocked out one at £250 and the Samsung DVD-HD950 which came out at a breathtakingly expensive £130! Wooo! If you want an affordable all in one inc blu-ray check out the Pioneer BDP-440 a snip at £240. Or, if you really want to push the boat out, the five star awarded all singing, all dancing Pioneer LX55, although that is a bit pricey at £350! ;)

Oppo are a high end marque!? Sorry, that just made me chuckle...... Oppo are famous for producing great budget DVD players! :)

I totally accept that you hadn't found a blu ray all in one at that point, but don't state it in terms that insinuate there isn't one.

As for 'no-one' makes affordable DVD-A players, check out those Pioneer's, they're supposed to be good value for money!

Oh sorry, Pioneer don't make DVD audio players........ ;)

To clear up any existing confusion, the stereo files on the DVD-Audio's are 24/96 at a bit rate of 4608 kbs.

Just use Foobar to open the iso, it saves faffing about with other software.
Posted By: FatDisc Date: 10 Apr 2012 08:10:00
Thank you.

@ Fathomie: Not only does it save faffing about with other software but I found it (DVD Audio component for foobar2000) also converts the lossless MLP tracks to FLAC files just a little faster than DVD Audio Extractor can. If there's multichannel mix versions additionally included in the ISO, I always convert those to multichannel FLAC if they're lossless (or if there aren't any lossless ones included then I convert them to .dts files if they're DTS, .ac3 files if they're AC3, and so on). It saves faffing about with severely overpriced optical media supporting player hardware and it also saves some harddrive space.

Even if you don't have surround speakers you can still use the Channel Mixer component for foobar2000 to play surround files in stereo mode directly (i. e. without the need to actually create any stereo files from them, so that you can save even more harddrive space still) and then you can still enjoy surround sound as soon as you choose to upgrade your stereo system to a surround system later.

Thanks also to ByGijS for pointing out in other posts made by other rippers the fact more than a few surround mixes (especially if they're lossless) are sounding better than the stereo versions of the same tracks. Even, if these surround mixes are downmixed to stereo using for example Channel Mixer component.
Posted By: wormdp Date: 10 Apr 2012 12:42:03
I use Foobar to decode to wave file of 24/96 or 24/192 but use DiscWelder to burn to DVD. I too belonged to the DVD-A group but this combination allows me to still play audio on normal DVD and Blu Ray players. Yes it is only in 24/96 and the 24/192 is downgraded to that on normal DVD players but I then can still move my discs around from player to player or house to house depending on what is available to me.
Posted By: Fathomie Date: 10 Apr 2012 23:02:34
Hi fatdisc

Going on the DR values it appears that rather than sounding better, the multi channel tracks are often less compressed. I'm not that impressed with the multi channel on either 'Farewell' or 'Signals'. I know both albums well, and the vocals on some tracks on Signals are really 'odd' on the DVD-A. The 5.1 also sounds very 'double stereo' rather than a true surround mix, but then very few surround mixes do impress me. The only exception is normally when Steve 'the God' Wilson has done them.

James Guthrie by contrast, has butchered the Floyd Surround mixes.

But I digress.........
