Wilhelm Kempff was a master of poetic lyricism, with a wondrous keyboard touch and a breathtaking command of subtle dynamics and tonal colorations--all invaluable attributes of any Schubert interpreter. He also had the knack of holding together large structures that can often seem aimless, thus avoiding another trap many pianists fall into, that of lavishing so much attention on passing detail that Schubert's "heavenly lengths" can seem wayward wanderings. The one criticism often heard is that Kempff emphasizes poetry at the expense of drama. This magnificent set leaves that claim unsubstantiated.
Few pianists have been so successful, for example, in what may be Schubert's wildest single movement, the nightmarish Andantino of the A major Sonata, D. 959. Here, Kempff captures the tortured mood of the piece to perfection without breaking its Classical frame. Tempos are generally expansive, but Kempff's tonal luster and unerring sense of natural phrasing never make you want him to step on the accelerator. A special treat is the inclusion of rarely heard early works. Some of these were left unfinished; others reflect a composer still mastering his craft. But most are of more than passing interest, and some have an enchanting, aching beauty. Kempff's Schubert set has been a recording classic since its release on LP; its availability in a space-saving CD box at a budget price is cause for celebration. --Dan Davis

Deutsche Grammophon repackages Wilhelm Kempff's classic Schubert sonata cycle in a space-saving box, and slashes the cost down to budget price. In addition, the performances have been sonically upgraded. An A/B comparison between DG's previous edition and the present remastering reveals Kempff's magical, intimate sonority to take on newfound robustness and detail. You can better ascertain Kempff's sparse and subtle pedaling, and there seems to be more air between the notes. These improvements reinforce the pianist's innate stylistic grasp and unpressured authority in this music.
Kempff's virtuosity is very real, yet never draws attention to itself. He approaches Schubert not so much as a two-handed pianist as a one-man chamber ensemble, or a seasoned lieder singer backed by a sensitive accompanist. There are, of course, a wealth of great individual Schubert Sonata interpretations that differ from, and even surpass Kempff's individual readings. But if you love the Schubert Sonatas, your life will be poorer for not knowing Kempff's irreplaceable recordings. --Jed Distler, ClassicsToday.com

"At his best, Kempff outplayed us all" I think is what Alfred Brendel said. I can't wait to hear Kempff's version of D960 or D959.
un gros merci !
My music is in FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) format, a lossless format analogous to APE (Monkey's Audio). You have a couple of options, depending on the software you have.
1. Convert from FLAC to WAV, using the FLAC frontend that may be found at http://flac.sourceforge.net/, then convert the WAV to APE using Monkey's Audio (no quality loss, since you would be transcoding from one lossless format to another). The downside is that this discards all the hard work I put into tagging these albums :)
2. Use foobar2000 to directly convert from FLAC to APE, preserving the tags. Alternatively, foobar2000 plays FLAC without difficulty, thus you wouldn't have to convert unless you wanted to. If you also have Nero Burning ROM installed, you can also use foobar2000 to burn an audio CD from the FLAC file.
3. If you wanted to burn to CD, Burrrn will read the embedded cuesheet in the FLAC files given and generate a proper audio CD (I haven't used it, but that's what it does as far as I know).
Hope this helps. I use FLAC because my digital audio player supports it, but I do realize that the vast majority of lossless music shares here and elsewhere use APE. For further info, see here: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=FLAC
incerta, thank you very much.
Thanks very much for your patient explaining & help. Foobar2000 in combination with Burrrn begin to unveil all the magic you posted.
Thank you for the music.
Well... I know how to extract every track from a big APE file.
(Edit cue, use make apl etc, etc).
Could you please tell how to extract every track from a big FLAC file?
Greetings from México.
Probably the best advice I can give you is to download and install foobar2000 (free) here: http://www.foobar2000.org/. Also download the Monkey's Audio decoding component from the "Optional Components" section. Foobar2000 supports conversion to tracks, but you will have to use the command-line converter feature in foobar to convert to APE. For further information, I suggest checking out the links to the foobar forum and wiki on the foobar home page.
WOW!! Greetings and great thanks from my girlfriend and I. Almost without parallel to
anything in music, the absolute purity and pristine beauty of the Schubert piano works,
over the years, has alway healed and cleansed my soul and infused me with great peace
and contentment (especially when life gets a bit tough sometimes). And your Kempff
Schubert cycle is a great work of art indeed. MUCH THANKS for your stunning post
(couldn't believe it when I first saw it), hard work and great generosity. Bravo!!!
Dear Merlin Magician:
Personaly, I use CUE Splitter v0.5 to split large APE or FLAC or MP3 files:-
http://www.enfis.it/downloads.php?cat_id=1
Just ensure that your FLAC and CUE files are in the same directory and then run the CUE
Splitter. The large FLAC file will then split into individual FLAC tracks much faster
than an APE file. (FLAC is much faster to decode/encode compared to APE but are slightly
bigger.)
Thanks for your kind words and good advice- I had forgotten about CUE Splitter. I don't know if it supports embedded cuesheets, but if it doesn't, just use the external cuesheets enclosed in the archive.
PS to citromos: I've just downloaded and decompress the 18 files. All work perfectly but you must use the RapidShare Folders (not the links below). And now enjoy the last sonatas of Schbert!
