Shakti was the band John McLaughlin assembled upon closing up shop with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Whereas the Orchestra was an eclectic, cosmopolitan force capable of high decibels of electric magnitude, with Shakti McLaughlin sought something more musically intimate and acoustic. And he found it by teaming up with three Indian virtuosi with whom he locked musically and psychically in a truly frightening manner over the course of three releases. Natural Elements was the final Shakti album in the 1970s (recently, McLaughlin resurrected his explorations with these musicians minus Shankar with the 1998 live double-disc Remember Shakti). It is also, to these ears, the best Shakti release. The group stretches their range and representation of moods like never before. Here the poppy (well, as much as you're gonna get with this group), laid-back "Happiness is Being Together" walks hand in hand with the fiery runs of "The Daffodil and the Eagle." The driving feel of a savanna at high-noon conjured by "Mind Ecology" eventually gives way to the soft, evening winds of "Peace of Mind." For prog fans who aren't aware of what astonishingly precise rhythmic technique Indian musicians can possess, give a good listen to the last part of "Get Down and Sruti." Have your hand on the rewind button, because that's the very next button you will be pressing, if you still have a pulse (this technique is called 'konakkol'). Natural Elements is currently only available as a Japanese import. However, rumor has it that Sony plans to eventually provide domestic reissues of the Shakti discs remastered, perhaps later this year or next year. Mark well the release date for Natural Elements when you see it. An enduring classic.
