At the time, Steve Winwood’s synthetic confections were regarded as refreshingly light. Today, this music sounds like a demo record for those $99 all-in-one keyboards (be the life of the party...). Had Winwood hired a band to perform these rather than lamely multitracking the music himself with all the elan of a wet cat, he would have had an average album on his hands. But there is something unsatisfying about five-minute songs that lean on no more than a synthesizer chord to keep things moving. Some of these numbers are disco filtered through cheesecloth (“Big Girls Walk Away”), others are limp and dimly lit soul songs (“There’s A River”). As with Arc of a Diver there are a few good tracks, notably “Valerie” (similar to “While You See A Chance”), “Help Me Angel” and “Talking Back To The Night.” “And I Go” is also effective in a Daryl Hall kind of way. But the whole “white soul” scene is predicated on there being some soulfulness; it doesn’t have to break the skin like Van Morrison but it should at least have teeth. Winwood not only keeps his teeth at home for this session but sucks up to commercial interests on the made-to-order anthem of love “While There’s A Candle Burning,” which is unwisely styled after Vangelis’ Chariots of Fire theme. Will Jennings’ lyrics don’t elevate the discussion one bit, suggesting haikus pulled from the medicated mind of an idle housewife (e.g., “There’s a dove ascending / Like my thought in the summer sky”). Of course, I have a real Steve Winwood blindspot. “Still In The Game,” which I find nearly unlistenable, stayed on the US charts for ten weeks (twice as long as “Valerie”). I understand the Phil Collins phenomenon, but I must have missed the bus on this whole Steve Winwood thing.
