VA - Christmas Selection (2009)

Those industrious Sonar Kollektiv types offer up a seasonal compilation that mixes bonafide Christmas songs with less obviously Yuletide-themed entries that tangentially get into the spirit of things. The highlights are Micatone's 'Last Christmas (Back To Nashville Version)', which puts up a minor-key, slide guitar laced rendition of the Wham classic and Benni Sings & Clara Hill's 'On Christmas Morning' which has a heartwarming communal feel thanks to the additional vocals contributed by the Sonar Kollektiv Office Choir. Other standouts come from Paul Bryan (with two cuts from his Listen Of album) and the two finely produced Jazzanova entries - in particular the luscious orchestration and punchy beats of 'Behold These Days (Berlin '74)'.
