Viva Napoli: Napolitan songs from 16th century

Viva Napoli in with irresistible verve, Doulce Mémoire presents a colourful picture of sixteenth-century Neapolitan society. Like characters from the commedia dell'arte, lecherous old men, lackadaisical courtesans and ridiculous lovers represent the rebellious and irreverent spirit of the people of Naples.
Early music, did you say? This is indeed early music, but what an appeal it still has today!
Usually in three parts, and set to a tune borrowed from popular sources, the villanella is characterised, above all, by its light and witty music, ideal for bringing out the ambiguity and eroticism of texts in the Neapolitan dialect.
The canzoni villanesche, which came into being in about 1530, appealed not only to the nobility, but also to the ordinary people of Naples. They poked fun at the mystique of the madrigal, then in vogue throughout Italy. In joyous carnival mood, they cocked a snook at social hierarchy, turned values on their head, and generally made game of the Spaniards who occupied Naples at that time. The genre made Naples one of the most influential musical centres of the Baroque era. So it is hardly
surprising that such songs inspired not only Neapolitan, but also highly serious European musicians like Adrian Willaert and Roland De Lassus in a far cry from the Lagrime di San Pietro!

@scarabou,
thanks so much for the album- I've not heard of this before!!

@gella,
What is your deal? I mean, I like FLAC too, in fact that's what I rip to and what I convert APE to, but I don't go around asking others to cater to my preferences. What do you have against APE?

Btw. APE+CUE duet can be burned directly onto CD (without decompressing) via foobar2000 (have to install two additional foobar plug-ins: CD burning support and Monkey's Audio decoding support; Nero must be installed on the system too because foobar2000 uses it as the burning engine).
