MiKTeX (pronounced mick-tech) is an up-to-date implementation of TeX and related programs for Windows (all current variants) on x86 systems. TeX is a typesetting system invented by Donald E. Knuth.

MiKTeXs main features include:

* easy to install
* complete: 1600 packages (fonts, macros, ...) are included
* living: packages are updated regularly (last update: 1/1/2008 )
* easy package management: missing packages can be installed automatically; a wizard helps you to keep
your MiKTeX system up-to-date
* fast previewing: the TeX output viewer Yap allows for an optimized edit-compile-view cycle (if the TeX authoring
system in use supports source specials)
* MiKTeX is open source

The MiKTeX distribution consists of the following components:

* TeX: the classic TeX compiler
* pdfTeX, XeTeX, Omega, NTS: various TeX variants
* MetaPost: converts picture specifications into PostScript commands
* a complete set of macro packages and fonts (e.g., LaTeX, ConTeXt, ...)
* Yap: a viewer for TeX output
* Lots of utilities: tools for the creation of bibliographies & indexes, PostScript utilities, and more.

Hi,
Thanks for a very nice post.
I was just wondering whether I need to install MilTex or WinEdt first.
Also I downloaded WinEdt to my old computer for about 400MB. Now your version is only 5MB.
So what is the difference?

Please help.
Thanks in advance

HI ZZTus
I have used WinEdt before, and I don't know why such big difference in size!
I just downloaded it from other internet websites.
Perhaps if you ahve WinEdt 5.5 with 400 MB, then yours is the full version.
As you know, it is just Text Editor. Other peoples are using different or
normal win editors.
Anyway makes no difference for Text editor using it with MikTeX.

I am using Linux, not windows.
