The History of Disbelief

In this first ever television history of disbelief, Jonathan Miller goes on a journey exploring the origins of his own lack of belief and uncovering the hidden story of atheism.

Atheism: A Rough History of Disbelief — known in the United States as A Brief History of Disbelief — is a 2004 television documentary series written and presented by Jonathan Miller for the BBC and tracing the history of atheism. It was first shown on BBC Four and was repeated on BBC Two. It was first shown in the U.S. on PBS in 2007.

The series includes extracts from interviews with various academic luminaries including Arthur Miller, Richard Dawkins, Steve Weinberg, Colin McGinn, Denys Turner, Pascal Boyer and Daniel Dennett. The series also includes many quotations from the works of atheists, agnostics and deists, all read by Bernard Hill. The program features an original percussion score by Evelyn Glennie.

The series consists of three 60-minute episodes:
"Shadows of Doubt'"
"Noughts and Crosses"
"The Final Hour"

A series of six supplementary programs was made from material that did not fit into the program; this was dubbed The Atheism Tapes.

Shadows of Doubt

BBC Two Monday 31 October 2005 7pm-8pm
Jonathan Miller visits the absent Twin Towers to consider the religious implications of 9/11 and meets Arthur Miller and the philosopher Colin McGinn. He searches for evidence of the first 'unbelievers' in Ancient Greece and examines some of the modern theories around why people have always tended to believe in mythology and magic.

Noughts and Crosses

BBC Two Monday 7 November 7pm-8pm
With the domination of Christianity from 500 AD, Jonathan Miller wonders how disbelief began to re-emerge in the 15th and 16th centuries. He discovers that division within the Church played a more powerful role than the scientific discoveries of the period. He also visits Paris, the home of the 18th century atheist, Baron D'Holbach, and shows how politically dangerous it was to undermine the religious faith of the masses.

The Final Hour

BBC Two Monday 14 November 7pm-8pm TBC
The history of disbelief continues with the ideas of self-taught philosopher Thomas Paine, the revolutionary studies of geology and the evolutionary theories of Darwin. Jonathan Miller looks at the Freudian view that religion is a 'thought disorder'. He also examines his motivation behind making the series touching on the issues of death and the religious fanaticism of the 21st century.

Atheism is just another religion or more a cult of Nimrod hiding behind sophistry. Instead of priests they have a supposed "grandlecturer" and zealot academics. Most of them have never worked a day in their lives and were probably molested by priests which is why they find religion hard to tolerate. Some are just confused individuals who blame others "God?" for their own inadequacies and "small man complaint" attitude. Some are just reactionaries to the Church and cannot accept that an institution so rich and powerful does not require them and they cannot get any of that support to buy their own meager books.

Atheism is nothing to do with science although it likes to pretend that has. It's the second oldest religion in the world. I usually enjoy a spot of atheist baiting, watching their arrogance crunble is almost as pleasing as making a bible thumper uncertain at your door.

Look at it another way how many atheists work for charitable causes? None. How many give away their wares for free? None What background are most atheists from? Jewish or Indeterminate.

jshm2 says about atheism "It's the second oldest religion in the world".
1st: Let's see boy (or girl), atheism is precisely the absence of religion. To say that atheism is a religion is the same silly statement as to say being bald is a kind of hair style.... hellooo bald=absence of hair.
2nd: And just for curiosity, I wonder which "religion" you assume as being the first one, Catholicism or any of its derivations? That's hilarious... (Oh, no, first of all The Chosen, I mean Judaism, or any of its exhaustive offspring, spanning from Christianity, in assorted flavors, and Islam, the religion of peace, to Bahaism and Mormonism, et al).
