Pollet's seminal Mediterranee cuts repeatedly between meditative camera movements around various subjects--Greek ruins, a Sicilian garden, a Spanish bullfight, a woman on a hospital cart, a fisherman--conjuring up a great many mysteries about their relation to one another.





One of the most incredible attempt of the cinema's history. 40 minutes and a single subject (glorious ambition) : how to film the Méditeranée ? Pollet built a space of sensation, putting things in line without explicit intentions. He didn't film himself more than a half of this movie, he has just ordering things (antique ruins, corrida, dead girl after the operation, factory, Horus) according with his own obsessions : darkness, morbid & illuminate feeling, chaos ('when there is life, there is death and there is chaos' he seems to say) and pain. Jean-Daniel Pollet es quizás el director más enigmático surgido de la nouvelle vague. Elogiado por cineastas (Cocteau, Becker o Godard) y desconocido por el público, su estilo ensayístico y poético ha tendido un puente entre la modernidad cinematográfica y las ruinas y vestigios de otras escrituras artísticas: el itinerario de 35000 km. por la Méditerranée, donde descubrió el único templo griego alejado del mar, Bassae; la lectura del cuento de Maupassant Le horla; o el paseo de La femme aux cent visages por los rostros femeninos de la historia de la pintura bajo la música de Pierrot le fou. Mediterranée (1963), es una disertación en torno a la realidad y el mito en la que las secuencias se suceden en base a sus similitudes formales, no a la congruencia de la narración.
