Isao Takahata, another anime king (“Grave of the Fireflies”, “Pom poko”, “My Neighbors the Yamadas”), directs the production, showcasing some characteristic elements of anime that surpass usual Saturday morning fare: crisp animation, depth of characters, and sophisticated musical tracks. Cinematography aside, viewers will be captivated by the optimistic orphan who lives with her grandmother and has no fear of “burglars, ghosts, or any old thing”. In the first story, “Panda Family”, Grandmother must travel to Nagasaki and, reluctantly, leaves Mimiko at home alone. To Mimiko's delight, she is not alone after all when a father and son set of panda bears moves in. Unaware they are Zoo escapees, Mimiko adopts Papa Panda and little Panny and writes to grandmother, “I've got myself a daddy and a baby”. Rapid-fire adventures begin for the trio, yet Mimiko keeps her cool whether dealing with Panny's mischief, zookeepers' threats, or a close call with a raging waterfall. High-flying fun continues in the second tale, “The Circus in the Rain”, as a baby tiger escapes the Big Top to join Mimiko's menagerie, a monsoon floods her home, and a runaway train spells disaster. The animation is limited but elegant, the characters are very appealing (The Papa in particular is an interesting Proto-Totoro figure) and the story is very easy for young ones to follow. “I picked this up for my niece and nephew (ages 4 & 5), who are both devoted “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Kiki's Delivery Service” fans. I was pretty excited that they loved Miyazaki, and wanted to keep them interested.

Well, they loved “Panda! Go Panda!” just as much as the other films. I was told they watched it five times in a row. Yay for Uncle Zack!

Of all of Miyazaki's films, this one is truly aimed at the younger crowd. There is very little of the multi-level storytelling that you will find in his later films. The pandas (who talk, by the way. I was pretty surprised by this, as Totoro does not talk.) are bundles of cuteness. The animation is decent, with lots of bright kid-friendly colors. The DVD is great, as it offers both an English and Japanese soundtrack. (It's a good film for people learning Japanese, because the vocab is limited.) This is very rare for imported kid's films.

Is the dvd in PAL or NTSC? Would be nice to know before I take the entire day to download it. Thanks for the very nice movie. My kids would love it.

Forgive, but the given release – most likely NTSC.
However – what difference?
In my country it is used SECAM. I have written down film on a disk. Has inserted in household DVD-player. Problems was not.
And on PC problems will not be at all.

Dear Avax,

Thanks for the info. My standalone players can only take NTSC. Multiformat (or PAL) dvd players are rare in this backwater I live in. The dvd will work fine for the PC, I know. I'll go ahead and download it. One way or another I'll get it work :-) Thank you for your kind attention and effort.
