In 16th-century Russia in the grip of chaos, Ivan the Terrible strongly believes he is vested with a holy mission. Believing he can understand and interpret the signs, he sees the Last Judgment approaching. He establishes absolute power, cruelly destroying anyone who gets in his way. During this reign of terror, Philip, the superior of the monastery on the Solovetsky Islands, a great scholar and Ivan's close friend, dares to oppose the sovereign's mystical tyranny. What follows is a clash between two completely opposite visions of the world, smashing morality and justice, God and men. A grand-scale film with excellent leading roles by Mamonov and Yankovsky.

hmmm is the movie russian but the language is english or is it russian all the way to moscow?

To note :
1. This is the last movie of Pavel Lungin, and, alas the last performance of the great Oleg Yankovsky as the Metropolite of Moscow. It's not a "remake" (bad costum of Hollywood to-day!!)of the Einsenstein's masterpiece, but a study from spiritual point of wiew of the relation fra Philip and the tsar tyran.
2. Philip is the "metropolite" ( archbishop) of Moscow - exiled to the monastery on the Solovetsky
Islands, guilty to resist to the tsar and killed for the same reason (cf. the same story as for st.Thomas Becket).
3. The movie is in russian. If somebody find subtitles for no-speaking russian people ??? But the movie is greatly worth to be seen.

Synopsis : 1565. Ivan le Terrible, tsar de Russie, subit une défaite dans la longue guerre qui l'oppose à la Pologne. Il ne voit autour de lui que trahison. Pour lutter contre les traîtres, il crée une garde personnelle, "les Chiens du tsar", dont le signe de reconnaissance est une tête de chien accrochée à leur selle. "Les Chiens du tsar" plongent la Russie dans un bain de sang. Effaré, le métropolite - le chef de l'Eglise russe - se réfugie dans un monastère. Ivan le Terrible croyant comprendre et interpréter les signes, voit le Jugement dernier approcher....
