Plaquée par son mari et survivant tant bien que mal aux difficultés dues à la présence israélienne en Cisjordanie, une Palestinienne saisit la chance de quitter sa terre natale en compagnie de son fils âgé de 16 ans afin d'aller s'installer chez sa soeur dans une petite ville de l'Illinois. Une fois sur place, la réalité au quotidien et l'intégration s'avèrent autrement plus difficiles que prévu, d'autant plus que la population locale prend cette femme orientale pour une ennemie, en la suspectant d'être originaire du pays que l'armée américaine vient d'envahir, l'Iraq, suite aux attentats du 11 Septembre. Emouvante tragi-comédie à la bonne humeur communicative, récompensée par le Prix de la critique internationale à la Quinzaine des réalisateurs à Cannes.

Muna, a single mother leaves the West Bank with Fadi, her teenage son, with dreams of an exciting future in the promise land of small town Illinois. As her son navigates high school hallways the way he used to move through military checkpoints, the indomitable Muna scrambles together a new life cooking up falafel burgers as well as hamburgers at the local White Castle.
