"Charly" is based on Daniel Keyes's story "Flowers for Algernon." Algernon is a lab rat who was the first guinea pig for a treatment to increase intelligence, and that treatment is spectacularly successful. Charly Gordon, a mentally retarded custodian, is the follow-on human subject of this experiment. As his success mirrors that of Algernon, Charly transforms into a genius.

The question is, however, will Charly continue to follow Algernon's path -- as the mouse's increase-in-intelligence ultimately proves to be temporary only. A poignant and inspiring tale.

Cliff Robertson, Claire Bloom, Lilia Skala, Leon Janney, Ruth White

Robertson earned an Oscar for Best Actor, and the screenplay garnered the Golden Globe in its category.
