Set during the Edo period under the Tokugawa shogunate, Nemuri Kyôshirô is a mysterious samurai with sleepy eyes whose mother is a noble’s daughter and whose father is a fallen Western priest. His trademark fighting technique is the Engetsu-Sappo, literally meaning "The Full Moon Cut." It is a technique in which he draws a circle with his sword -- his opponent is always slain by the time the circle is completed. In the fourth installment of this samurai series, a fugitive female "saint" and a sadistic drug-addled princess both have their eyes on Kyoshiro. The fact that a bunch of ruthless smugglers also want him dead is the least of his problems!

This is the episode in which the nature of Kyoshiro's character is finally revealed in its full sadistic glory. Sword of Seduction is somewhat of a departure for the Sleepy Eyes of Death saga. Whereas the previous movies had typed Nemuri as a stray dog ronin, a sardonic fatalist without a past or future like Yojimbo, here we get to discover who he really is, his parents and the circumstances of his birth. If Sleepy Eyes of Death has the reputation of a dark and violent chambara (especially for its time), it is exactly because of movies like Sword of Seduction. I don't want to spoil the ending that reveals Nemuri's birth but the imagery associated with him literally types him as a sword devil (to borrow the title of a Kenji Misumi picture Ichikawa worked in the next year): the son of the black mass.- imdb user comments
