Based on Elleston Trevor's novel, The Flight of the Phoenix opens with a well-staged plane crash in the middle of the Sahara desert. The pilot (James Stewart) and the navigator (Richard Attenborough) do their best to maintain order among the survivors, a group of oil men not well-suited for survival in the desert wastes. Some of those who appear to be the most resourceful reveal themselves to be inept or cowardly, while other less prepossessing types -- notably bespectacled Standish (Dan Duryea) -- demonstrate surprising inner reserves of strength. The ultimate fate of the survivors rests in the hands of Heinrich Dorfmann (Hardy Kruger), who uses the wreckage of the old plane to design a new one. The Flight of the Phoenix was dedicated to the memory of veteran stunt pilot Paul Mantz, who was killed while filming the take-off scene of the new plane.

Robert Aldrichs 1965 entstandenes ungemein intensives Drama über einen Flugzeugabsturz in der Sahara gerät zu einem universell gültigen Psychogramm über Menschen, die sich in verzweifelter, aussichtsloser Lage wiederfinden. Im beinahe revisionistisch anmutenden Blick auf das klassische Heldentum wird jede Figur aus der ungleichen Gruppe bis an ihre Grenzen ausgelotet. Eigenmächtige Versuche, den Elementen zu trotzen, werden folgerichtig bestraft. Als Ausweg bleibt am Ende der kollektive Wille und die individuelle Genialität.
Man könnte in dem Film eine Allegorie auf den transzendierenden Wahnsinn des Kalten Krieges sehen, aber Aldrich (Rattennest) macht aus dem Stoff eine derart mutige und unmittelbare Erfahrung, dass man den Wüstensand zwischen seinen Zähnen zu spüren glaubt. Überragende schauspielerische Leistungen von James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Krüger, Peter Finch und dem Rest.

El especialista en cine de aventuras Robert Aldrich cuenta el accidente de un avión en medio del desierto. Los supervivientes quedan abandonados a su suerte, pero uno de los viajeros, que asegura ser diseñador de aviones, anima al resto a que le ayuden a construir un ultraligero para salir de ahí.
Un film muy logrado, tanto que Hollywood no se ha resistido a preparar un remake. El reparto es estupendo, con James Stewart a la cabeza. La sorpresa sobre los auténticos conocimientos del 'ingeniero' es mayúscula

In seguito a un atterraggio di fortuna, un gruppo di persone, tra cui un ferito, attende i soccorsi in pieno deserto. Il ferito muore, ma dei soccorsi nessuna traccia. Uno dei superstiti è progettista areonautico e propone di costruire un velivolo di fortuna con i pezzi del relitto; l'impresa sembra pazzesca, ma viene portata a termine, nonostante altre morti. Individui ordinari in una situazione straordinaria: una formula classica a cui Aldrich era particolarmente affezionato; grande lavoro d'attori per dare il giusto risalto a caratteri e conflitti.
