Imdb info

Filmed in Lisbon 11 years before Wenders’ “Lisbon Story” (published here ) by a Swiss director Alain Tanner, and probably his best film, with Bruno Ganz and Teresa Madruga…one of the favourite films of mine, and also one of favourites of FNB.47 ‘s…

Specially dedicated to FNB.47, of all films, this is the best one I can present him!

At the beginning of the film, Ganz remarks to a barmaid that the clock in her bar is not indicating the right time. She replies: “The clock is right. It’s the world that is wrong.”

anyone to translate if possible, please?

“I don’t know more than I used to”

I've looked for some reviews on Imdb and elsewhere, but I must admit I didn't find a satisfactory one which could talk about this film ... therefore, I encourage you to write comments below...for me, I can’t really say what this film is about. Is it about Time? Is it about Love? About the Water, about the Sea, about Air, or Wind? I don’t even think we should ask ourselves this question, it’s better to let ourselves go and enjoy this poetic film which is so rarely full of Life! It’s much deeper than it appears on the first look, and I think it’s one of those that succed in touching “the other dimension”…and the fact it was made in Lisbon is just a gift to our eyes!

Music in the film was superbly performed by Jean-Luc Barbier. If someone has got some of his music, it would be most welcome to add some links in the comment...

What a big surprise :)).
Thank you very much kharmok.
For me too it is the best work of Alain Tanner and one of my best-loved-movies-ever.
I have seen this film soo many times at movie-theatres in the past 20 years. But I still havent a decent copy of it with Eng. s/t. So this is one of the best gifts I've ever had. Thanks a lot.

Will you (or anyone else, for that matter) upload someday the two other Tanner masterworks?, Charles mort ou vif (1969) and Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l'an 2000 (1975). Movie fans around the world will be grateful. And thanks a lot for this one.

One of the best films I've ever seen. I used to go to Lisbon many many years ago...
Now having this film here at home, will make me have those great feelings I felt then...

kharmok:
Thanks a million for this one!

Thanks, kharmok! The translation goes something like this: "Don't say what you know without knowing what you're saying"
Posted By: inem Date: 10 Nov 2007 17:04:13

Dans la Ville Blanche might be closely described as about "the journey of self-discovery"

These review/information might complement Kharmok's post : allmovie.com and artfilm.ch

An interesting trivia about Jean-Luc, the composer ... During the period of filming this movie, perhaps, he was going through a journey of self discovery as well (joining Church of Scientology, which later he abandoned and took to court for "fraud"). The parallelism might connect him to the film , resulting in a masterful musical score.....JMHO :)

Regards :)

Dear friends,

Big thanks to all of you for your support! It was my dream to publish this important film, and I was waiting for nearly a year to find English subtitles...which appeared just few days ago out of the blue...thanks to the unknown translator!

@ suddenrain: nema na cemu, bice i drugi put :)

@ FNB47: Dear FNB47, without you, I wouldn't be posting, and I wouldn't be here, like many of us... I only watched 3-4 Tanner films in the 80-ies, and a couple of days ago I could finally watch "Dans la Ville Blanche" only for the second time! Yesterday I watched it again while making snapshots, and realised how great film it is...I'm very happy to present it to you, and to share it it with other real-film lovers...

@ aksh6: No, thanks, I don't really need $50 in a week - when I have films like this one!
:)

@ seventh_art: I have got "Jonas" and a few more Tanner films, and I would gladly publish them, unless FNB47 and Scalisto plan to do so in the future...I will talk to them

@ kali35: I "envy" you! :)) I never had a chance to see Lisbon...for me, the only expirience is this film and "Lisbon Story" (I didn't like "Father and Son"). If you could tell us, how do you feel Lisbon from Wenders' film?

@ Scalisto: Thanks for this little translation...you know, as I was waiting for nearly a year for English subs, I have emailed Spanish subs to my friend from Mexico, and asked him to translate it for me...but he didn't do that, and I have nearly approached you for help, as I was getting desperate to get them...I admit I was ashameed, knowing that you are very busy and you're doing an excellent work, I have all of your films...thanks very much!

@ inem : "Dans la Ville Blanche might be closely described as about "the journey of self-discovery" - Yes, I agree with you, it could be the best description...thanks for the links and support!

@ galmuchet: I'm glad I can give you "back" a little, after downloading many films from you...merci beaucoup! And the snaps...well I made A LOT of them, more than 100, there are so many good ones in this film...and as Avax pixhost was out of order, I uploaded them to tinypic...I don't know which is the best?

@ Patyomkin: similar expirience with me...so I'm happy to share it!

p.s. Anyone willing to translate Tarkovsky-alike film from Russian to English?

Thanks a lot kharmok.

You'll make me very happy if any of you (kharmok, FNB47 or Scalisto) upload "Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l'an 2000 (1975)".

Living in a very small community with very few and very small film festivals and a monopoly of Hollywood films, quite a few real films have unfortunately escaped me, but I treasure those I have seen and liked. You can therfore imagine what a tresure trove Avaxhome is for me with people like you, FNB.47, etc. sharing many of the best films that have been made.
This film has never been shown where I live as far as I know and by the very high praise that both you and the incredible FNB.47 give it I look very much forward to an extremeley enjoyable cinematic experience. Thank you once again kharmok.

@ suki2000 : Thanks for your strong support, to FNB47 and to me as well, from my earliest days last year... It will only make me happy to make you happy :)

I'll post "Jonas", only not that soon, maybe around Christmas...

@ seventh_art : good news about "Jonas..." for you as well...only "Charles mort ou vif (1969)" - I don't have it now, but maybe in future... I'll have to re-watch some films, and watch some that I've never seen..

@ harrygee : Your comments usually come last, but they are very precious to me...I was very lucky to be able to watch hundreds of real-cinema films when I was a teenager, following the "tradition" of my family: grandma - film buff, uncle - film buff and director, mum - film buff and worked on some films... and I'm very well aware of the "priviledge" of having a Cinematheque and Festivals near you... since my early days of cinema, more than 20 years have passed, and I was only able to get BACK to that passion with internet, and discovery of FNB47's treasure...he has put me back to the right track, and opened my eyes to many films and directors I've missed...

We all live in a more-or-less Hollywood-poisoned environment, where our standards, our views, our intelligence, our psyche, our feelings, our eyes, are being attacked, lowered down and manipulated, our humanity sistematically destroyed ( just look at the Hollywood standards now and 50 years ago ) almost like someone has planned to make us spiritual zombies, addicted to false things and artificialities in the world of TV ads... Films like "Dans la ville Blanche" are fresh air that bring us back to life, and restore our natural being...

I am so glad when someone writes to me, saying that certain film has opened his eyes and that he has become aware of that fact.
