Gaslight (1944)

Paulas aunt Alice Alquist, a famous entertainer, is murdered in her home. Paula, who lives with her aunt finds the body. Police fail to find the killer and Paula is sent away to school. Ten years later, Paula returns to London with her new husband. They take up residence in her aunts house, which she has inherited. Paula is increasingly isolated by her husband but does come to the attention of an admirerer of her aunt, Mr. Brian Cameron

1875 wird in London die Operndiva Lady Alice Alquist in ihrem Haus erwürgt. Ihre Nichte Paula, die bei ihr aufwuchs, lernt den Pianisten Gregory Anton kennen, der sie umwirbt und heiratet. La película de George Cukor está basada en una pieza teatral de Patrick Hamilton, Angel Street, adaptada al cine por el propio Hamilton y John Van Druten. Nos encontramos ante un melodrama de intriga gótico, género que tuvo numerosos exponentes durante la década de los cuarenta, destacando los títulos Sospecha y Rebeca de Alfred Hitchcock.
