The Americanization of Emily (1964)
DVD | 115 minutes | English (w/subs in 3 languages) | B&W | AVI | 23 fps | 1238 kbps | 768 x 432 | (audio 160/48) | 1.1 Gb

In World War II England an unlikely affair blooms between idealistic motor pool driver Julie Andrews and cynical USN Lt. Cmdr. James Garner. An endearing blend of bittersweet romance and savage military satire.

Screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky (Marty) sinks his satirical fangs into this story of an American naval officer (James Garner) selected to be the first victim at the invasion of Normandy. Julie Andrews plays a prim, British war widow who falls for him. Cynical in tone, the story becomes an interesting collision of manipulative interests and renewed life, the same formula that worked so well in Chayefsky's scripts for Network and Hospital.

I confess to being a long-time James Garner fan, and of all of his roles, I think his performance in Emily has got to rate as one of his very very best. More than that, the script is close to masterpiece, the direction and photography excellent, and the other cast members -- "big names" (Julie Andrews, James Coburn) and otherwise -- turn in terrific performances as well. This is a classic. And very much fun, too.

This is a very very interesting movie. Be it from the history and american forces point of view or be it from the war and what it brings for people or be it from a very personal relation point of view.
I was thinking about it a few days ago, nice to have it posted, thanks a lot!

I'm glad you all like the film. It's such a fine film, and it's nice to share it. And, frankly, it's gratifying to know that one's effort has been worth it.

As to the subtitles issue (see Tlon's comment, above), subtitles of this sort can be a little tricky to manage in various media players. Subtitles such as these are what I call "quasi-hard-coded" because (as I understand it at least), the subtitles are in an image-type format which is broadcast across the screen (versus the "sub" or "srt" type subtitles, which are essentially text files).

Anyway, the subtitles here are in fact in English, French and Spanish. See, for example, the subtitles-as-displayed and the subtitle controls in Media Player Classic and in ZoomPlayer, as reflected in the following jpg file:

(Parenthetically, I would include pictures of the subtitles as they show up in ZoomPlayer as the movie plays, but so far as I know, ZP doesn't have the capacity to take screen shots of the movie-as-playing. As for this player, you'll just have to take my word for it that they do in fact play (in all three languages), if properly invoked)

Hopefully you can work out the details of invoking the subtitles in your player-of-choice (or your player-of-lesser-choice), if you need to. That said, if you've been able to follow along with me here so far, well, I expect that you don't have any pressing need for the foreign subtitles, in any event.

Share and enjoy.
